    Default The Nests

Swallows' nests, below a low train 'bridge' .. reminds me of the versamel-voŽl nests in the Northern Cape.

This little one made the nest at the bottom of a roll of wire in our workshop .. and in there it seems like three wooly little ones

Could it be 'Tinktinkies' .. I haven't been able to get a pic of the adult and I don't want to interfere too much.

Looks like it could be that white-browed sparrow weaver's nest - I didn't know that they have an entrance and an exit though!

This one was taken in the Northern Cape. In the second picture there is a lady's wedding ring next to it for scale.

    Any ideas?

That's a good guess. Too small for a plover or a Courser.

What does the nest of a Sand Grouse (Kelkiewyn) look like?

There was a really interesting paper published earlier this year that swallows might be evolving shorter wings because they nest under highway bridges.

Some guys noticed that the number of swallow deaths caused by vehicles under bridges was decreasing since they started recording 30 years ago.

They measured some birds and realised that their wing lengths had decreased, making them less likely to be killed by cars because the higher wing loading makes them more maneuverable and able to pull up before traffic level.
