Default Air Suspension Mercedes Benz ML

    Hi guys

I am looking for some advice on Air Shocks for a Mercedes Benz ML.
I live in Durban and need to replace my front shocks.
The agents are too expensive and I am looking for a cheaper alternative.

Does anybody have any suggestions please.

    Many thanks

    Do you have to replace
    • the strut (complete)
    • the air suspension (bellows)
    • the shock absorber?

What are the problems with them?

To tie in with what Gerhard said, there are various options depending on the issue at hand. Arnott Industries stock everything you may need but pricing will largely depend on what you have to replace. If only bellows then you can contact Airspring Supply Company in Jet Park for a local solution, struts/ shocks on the other hand are not as easy to come by and you will either have to import a set from a company like Arnott or pay MB dealer prices(And they will not sell struts alone, they sell the complete unit)

Replacement is not a huge job and should take about 45 minutes per side if you have the correct tools.

Hi Guys,Thank you for your feedback. At this stage I have to replace the two front shocks - complete units.I searched online and found a company based in Ballito called KZN Air Shocks. They are Air Suspension Specialists and have a dedicated fitment centre in Ballito.I am taking my car there today for an assessment and quotation.I have also heard that Arnott gives a guarantee on their products but it is an American based guarantee. (this is what a mate told me, so not 100% sure)KZN Air Shocks offers a 12 month locally supported guarantee.

Unless you tell us what the real problem is (symptoms etc), (not the franchise's opinion ), we can't really comment or give advice.

    Hi Jan

I saw your post about KZN Air Shocks.

I took my car there for an assessment last year November.
They were very efficient and provided me with great service.
I also had to replace two front shocks and a pump.
They gave me a 12 month guarantee on the units and I am very happy.

Service was good, I am a very happy customer and will most definitely recommend them to anyone.
They stock a variety of shocks for other vehicles as well.

I have also referred a friend who owns a Touareg and he was also very happy with their service.

The car is dropping over night in the front. both sides.
I can hear the pump running the whole time trying to lift the car.
I can also hear air leaking from the shocks
It is currently a very uncomfortable drive.

When I phoned KZN Air Shocks I gave them the symptoms and they indicated that there could be a leak in the bellow.
So I booked it in for an assessment.

Barry thank you for your input, this gives me peace of mind that clients have been there and are giving good reviews.

The leak COULD be the bellows, but it could also be a fitting or pipe.
The chance of both front struts packing up at the same time is VERY remote!

    Keep us posted.

The car will however level the front automatically to try compensate for the leaking bellow on one side. But yes, could be a number of things.

To check for a leaking bellow or connection, spray soapy water and look for bubbles.

Agreed, both sides might be down, but fault is most probably on one side only.

I can almost guarantee it is the right front bellows that has gone. Changing both sides is a good idea though as the other one follows within 10k to 20k KM.

    Thanks everyone.
I will keep this in mind when I am at the Fitment Centre having the assessment done.

Why the ‘right’ one out of interest?

I don't know but when my vehicle had the exact symptoms described by the OP I did a lot of reading on the matter and almost universally it pointed to the right front being the first of the bellows to perish and develop a leak. It just so happened it was the case on my vehicle too. Subsequently I have helped two people with their ML's and so far the the leak was also always on the right front first. If I were to guess I would say it has to do with heat from the engine bay.

    Hi guys,

Just an update from my side.
My car was booked in yesterday.
It seems as though the right front was leaking. The bellow had cracks and you could see the air leaking through the bellow when they sprayed soap water on it.

I replaced both front shocks as this was advisable to do so.
    My car is like new.

Long story short, I got great service from KZN Air Shocks.
I will most certainly recommend them if you are in the KZN Area.
They specialise in Air Suspension and I got a 12 month guarantee.
    They are worth a try.

Thanks again for all the input.

I have the same problem with front rh doing down overnight, it I pump the suspension up to any of the off road settings the suspension stays up for weeks. Any ideas what problem can be as it is not the belows or pipe. I have tried soapy water and no leaks detected.
