According to me the best time is from around Apr/May to Aug/Sept. It is not that hot and very little to no rain. This was the case during the 3 times I visited Nam .

Weather wise, the summer months are extremely hot and also their rainy season. If you want to go to Etosha, you want to avoid this time of year. When it rains, the animals find water all over the place and activity around water holes where you would see a lot in the dry season, is limited. Driving on their roads this time of year also becomes a bit risky as the grass grows high right up to the road. Due to the rain it get's quite high and the odd Kudu and Warthog might surprise you by jumping out in front of you, crossing the road. Believe me, you do not want to hit one of them. Having said all that, it is still a wonderfull and beautiful country - any time of the year. Enjoy your trip!

If possible don't drive at knight because of animals (Kudu's) grazing next to the road. In 03 during a night drive coming from Etoshia between Keetmans and Grunau we counted 16 kudu's that was less than a meter of the shoulder of the road. This exclude small buck ....

Thanks, we are currently planning to go from 21 March to 7 April, would it be necessary to book campsites in advance or can one expect to find a spot to camp? (5-6 vehicles)

Sounds Like you are right in the middle of the rainey season, don't forget the malaria factor, I have been there in early May 2005 and it was very nice with all the pans and dams full. The Kunene was also nice and full compared to our recent trip of two weeks ago where there was hardly enough water to create a waterfall at Ruacana. My opinion you need to book in Etosha as they are very busy with tourists and overlanding groups. There were at least four of these groups at Halali when we were there.

Thanks for the response, the idea was to catch the end of the rainy seaon, and definitely planning malaria precautions as we are taking kids as well.

The current plan is to go via Botswana - Nata - Kasane, visit Vic Falls, through the Caprivi - Rundu - Tsumeb - Etosha - Ruacana Falls - Epupa Falls and back through Botswana. Approx 5000 Km in 17 Days. We have just done similar distance through Namaqua 4x4 route, McDougals Bay and Richterveldt in 16 days.

Currently thought booking is a defnitive at Etosha as the plan is to spend 4 days at the park, would like to keep it as flexible as possible though
