If he already likes the polo, I would rather buy a secondhand golf in that range. Much more car ! Differrent league.
As you will already know ( considering your signature! )

Hi All,
My brother is to get his first car at the end of the year and my old man needs some advice.
Apparently he wants a 1.6 Polo (lets put this down to youthful naivete). I suggested a Suzuki Swift Sport as another option, but I'm "old", so what do I know?
His criteria (being a windgat 20 year old, as they all are) are as follows:
The old man's requirements:
- Must look good
- Must pack a bit of a punch (performance)
- Must be comfortable (he will be travelling the Swakopmund to Stellenbosch route often)
- Must have gadgets (all these fancy things that platkarre come with these days)
Any comments/observations will be appreciated. The budget is R170 000 to R 220 000
- Safety

- Safety
- Fuel economy
- Cheap(ish)/easy maintenance - preferably service plan
If buying new, have a look at the chev cruz. Also at the Kia range. Good value for money and lotsa gadgets.
Unfortunately I already recently sold my GT Turbo...

As I saw on another thread - if Dad's paying then Boet gets a 1995 Toyota Conquest.
Indeed. Its obvious that I'm a massive VW fan, but I think that Suzuki has beat them to the post with the Swift.
The only VW I think really still is value for money is the new Jetta (its massive, safe, cheaper than the Golf and extremely refined). Unfortunately it a bit of an "old mans car" so my brother would never go for it...
@Meester: The dad we are talking about is WAY too safety conscious to let a 20 year old loose on a '95 Conquest for a 2000km road trip! haha

Well except for Comfort the Polo does not tick one of his requirments, my wife owned a 2004 1.6 Polo and then a Swift. And she loved the Swift, ride is better, handling, fuel consumption, no cam belt, better service, better looks, why would you want a Polo?
Nissan Qashqai
Series 3 Landy
Land Cruiser 4.2D work
Nothing wrong with the Polo.
Still remains one of the better handling little cars, and nothing wrong with the safety either.
They are equally good and bad in these small cars.
Some car, some bike and two legs

This scenario is an exact replica of what my BIL went throught now (he's 23). The advise I gave him was to write down the requirements first before even looking at a specific car.
Long distance traveling = safety + economy + reliability
Young age = want something "cool". No problem with that - we were all there.
Cost of ownership = economy + parts availability + reliability + resale value
etc
After sales requirements and service etc
Then match what vehicles fit the requirements in the budget. What is very important is that if he's got his heart set on a specific brand, then he'll not be happy with anything else. Don't enforce it, but rather guide him to get the car that he likes matching the requirements criteria.
The budget you're mentioning would have lots of options. Personally I'd also go for a Polo or a Golf V (similar to the one in your signature I note ). VWs are great quality vehicles, extremely reliable, cheap to maintain and have a proven track record in the country. As a mechanic once told me - don't buy anything that were introduced to the country post 1994.
ps... my BIL ended up with a 2009 Golf V Tdi for R150k...

Jimny.
Just bought my son a Honda Ballade for his birthday. Nice deal and a lot of bells and whistles.
All over a nice vehicle.

I have both the 1.6 TDi and 1.4 Tsi Jettas and both 7 speed DSG automatics. The small 1.4 Tsi (118KW) is pretty nifty on performance with great fuel economy, and good in the safety and luxury compartments as well. Obviously these engines are available in the Golf range as well. The TDi is better on fuel but with a bit less oompf.
The Jetta won over the Golf due to the fact that I got the full maintenance plan (90000km/4years) on them while this was an extra on the Golfs, and I prefer the additional boot space.
There are obviously a LOT of other options available.

Ah, in that case....
Dear old man,
Please ensure you son get's a safe, reliable and economic vehicle that he likes and approves. Not the latest and greatest model however and bring the budget down. Rather save the money in a fund for him or go on a vacation with him and spend time together.
Regards,
young man

Jeeeez i think lyties of today have it or get it far to easily. I had to work and pay off my car, wasn't a freebie at all. Something went wrong, i needed to investigate how to repair it, or get the funds to send it to somebody who did.
Just think things have changed so drastically, kids growing up being spoonfed and things handed on the silver platter inplace of working for it. I don't know, maybe i'm just different but i am sure there are a good few of you out there who will agree.
