Default Zambia Trip Report - 17 August to 9 September

Just got back from a fantastic trip to Zambia. This is not a detail trip report but a summary of what we did. It was a birding focussed group but took in some of the usual Zambia things as well.

We started by heading to the Southern Kafue via Kazangulu and Livingstone and spending a couple of nights at Nanzhila Plains. From there we left the Kafue via Ithezi Tezi and overnighted north of Lusaka at Fringilla Lodge - if you go past here stock up on some great fresh bread, good steak and some of the best boerewors you will find anywhere.

We then went to Kasanka NP and camped at Pontoon Campsite - a really beautiful place where in the evenings the Sitatunga come out to graze right in front of the camp.

From there we went to Shoebill Island on the edge of the Bangweulu Swamps - unfortunately we couldn't find the shoebill - involved lots of interesting walking and our clients were a bit aged to attempt the walk. However the view of thousands - last years count was 75000 - of Black Lechwe on the flood plains made up for not finding the shoebill.

We then went via Forest Inn to Mutinondo Wilderness for a few days before tackling the route to South Luangwa going down the Muchinga Escarpment.

After having to build a road around around a broken down vehicle on the escarpment we camped at a community campsite outside the South Luangwa on the banks of the Mutinondo River. The next day we drove through the South Luangwa - crossing the sand-bagged Mupamadzi River to Mfuwe and Wildlife Camp.

After some great game drives, lions the famous Luangwa leopards and a Pels Fishing Owl we started the trip back via Bridge Camp on the Luangwa River and Bruce Miller farm near Choma. We then went back in to Bots via Kazangula.

A fantastic trip and well worth doing. I have attached a couple of pics to whet the appetites.

    Thanks for the info.
We are going to Kasanka in Dec also Pontoon camp.
Was planning to camp at Frangila.
How long did the drive from Frangila to Kasanka take?

On the way to Kasanka we did an overnight birding stop at Forest Inn but you could easily get from Fringilla to Kasanka in a day. Fringilla to Forest Inn was about three hours and from there to Kasanka I think took us about 4 hours - we had a group of birding clients with us so we had to stop for tea, birds etc.

Cobus, if you can I would suggest you skip Fringilla and try to reach Forest Inn. It is much nicer and lovely birding. From there its a short haul to Kasanka
