Angry Won't start after lying down!!!

    HAIR RAISING!!!

OK. Front left tyre burst while on a sand road. I ended up in a ditch on the left hand side of the road. So close to laying on its side it was scary. Only thing stopping me from lying on my side was the side of the ditch.

When I stopped the motor was still running fine. Defender coming past helped me out after a major battle. Back on the flat road – changed the burst wheel and ready to go.

NO! Now she won’t start. It was lying on its right hand side.
    · Did the diesel pump suck air?
    · Has oil got where it does not belong?
    · Has diesel got where it does not belong?
    · Where should I start looking or do I leave it to the indies to look at?
Your advice will as usual be appreciated.

all models of Defender and Disco 1 & 2 have a "rollover" switch situated against the firewall. pretty sure the D3 has the same sort of safety device.
that switch is there specifically for cutting fuel supply in the event of a rollover.
push down firmly on the top of the switch (it looks like a mushroom) and then try to start.

Yes its called an Inertia switch, if I am not mistaken it should be mounted on the firewall on your right hand side with the bonnet open, that's where it is located on the D2.

Check your user manual for the running out of fuel, restart procedure as a first step ?

If the motor was still running, then surely the inertia switch would not have cut out?

Ditto. My Alfa did the same. Its switch was under the passenger seat. The engine also idled fine until I turned it off and wanted to start again... weird.

    Red face

Got up this morning and saw some more damage than previously seen, so got hold of the insurance to take it away for repairs, panel shop can get it running again and then it’ll go to The Induna to check it over.
Visible damage is not worth pics and no camera with me yesterday to get photos unfortunately.
Just glad I was alone and only slightly hurt.

    you have us curious
try the mushroom button (if you can find it)
according to the documentation i consulted, it should be on the firewall in front of the passenger side in the engine bay.

would be great to know as general info
had a customer a while back that had his car cut out regularly while driving a moerofabad road in Botswana
being a Td5 he had all these visions running through his head and eventually figured out that the switch was defective and gippoed it to get back.

the Td6 often gets a bad rap but there are a couple of basics to look out for. once aware of these "weaknesses", fault finding becomes a lot easier.

our TD 5 disco would not start after I changed the oil and the filters. One thing that puzzled me was that I did not hear the fuel pump. It is usually quite audible after a fuel filter change. I read these posts, found the rollover switch and pressed it - the familiar fuel pump sound came on and it started. This is something really worthwhile knowing about thanks to your posts. I wonder if the rollover switch is not the solution to many of the LR will not start questions! Checked in our defender - sure enough, there is the is the rollover switch. A rather belated thanks for your posts.
