I’m pretty sure you could mount a few bicycles on a Thule type rack using the wood carrier and put the wood inside near the back door to balance it all out.

This solution which a few of us are using works well with no adverse sway in my experience

Thanx, all looks good and the same thing i have in mind.
But what about a wheel clamp ontop of the front bed for the forks and the back wheel rest then on the woodrack? The bicycles wont stand sideways, but nose in the air to the top of front bed. Will easily get 3 bikes in i think?

I've seen guys mounting more than one bike on the nosebox.....works well, except when I weighed at the hitchball with two bikes just free-standing on the nosebox it was 160kg.
Too heavy....also illegal, weight must not exceed 100kgs at the hitchball regardless of towbar & vehicle specs.
That's why I went one front and one at the back.
With full water tank and rest of the van fully laden it is now around 105kgs.

AAAH makes sense as well. Didnt think about that. With 3 bicycles, the weight on towball might be a problem.

Wow, was I pleased to see this post, well not pleased but happy that I know this restriction. I'd always thought that the South African ruling followed the Australian/American recommendation rather than the European norm. In Australia the general rule of the hitchball weight is 10% of the loaded towed weight although the acceptable norm ranges between 7% and 15% of the loaded weight. For our Baobab I thought I was okay at 180kg as my loaded van weighs in at almost 1,800kgs. Guess I'd better check when we get back to Africa.

I thought in SA its 150kg max but your manufacturer may limit the weight on the drawbar even more. Usually in manual or on the label on the drawbar (third party).

Definitely 100kg in SA but the towbar plate may show the max weight.

    Looks like a good plan.
Was at Bush Lapa this morning with my caravan for a few things and they also mentioned similar setup. Waiting for a quote form them.
There will be clamps ontop of the foldout bed and on the wooden rack. Bicycle front wheel removed and clamped to the top clamp and back wheel strapped down on woodrack.
    Will hear what they say.
Stefan, this is with the bikes on

    Hi all BL owners.
Just another question. Im a leak when it comes to the electricity setup of the Ratel.
Bought my caravan last year in May, so it is one year and 4 months old.
Got the normal battery charging system that comes with the Ratel with two 105 batteries. Got extra 2 X 150W solar panels on the roof.

3 weeks ago, the batteries was kapoet. They charged with 220V but as soon as I move over to solar, but batteries last about 20min then both dead. There was also a burning smell in the Ratel.
They were never charging over 15V and lower than 11V.
So BL changed the batteries and checked all connections from solar to charger to regulator to where ever to the end. All seems fine.

How long is this 105 deep cycle batteries suppose to last? It can become quite an expensive exercise annually if I have to replace 2 batteries every year?

If charged correctly and not drained then they should last for at least 3-4 years. I am not a lead acid fan so have only used lead crystal and now recently LifePo4. No hassles since 2012.

Thanx Bruce, that was what I was thinking as well. 2 to 3 years wont be too bad, and if it needs replacing then, move over to lead crystal or Lifepro.
The thing that boggles me is that both batteries died at the same time. With lockdown, they were constantly on 220V and every 2nd or 3rd week pulled on the lawn, 220V removed and solar charging. Just to alternate charging options. Was only running the 90L NL fridge.

I have experienced similar issues in the past on my trailer. When one battery packs up it actually damages the remaining one aswell. Check your charger settings, perhaps you need to adjust it.
I personally isolated the two batteries (on my trailer) when not in use, so that they don't go into the discharge cycle and i left them fully charged.

I replaced my batteries with a single 200aH gel battery in the BL, it works a bit better for me and takes up less space.

Okay, after a stressful time, the end product came out as planned.

I wanted my dish washing area easy to open and close in my efforts of becoming a lazy pitching camper...

I made a cassette unit that fits into the back and that is covered with a compartment with a door. This created a double sealing are and there will not be dust or water getting in.

The cassette has a main drawer that pulls out and then the two sides pull out. First time I'm using "push to open" slides and they work great. Don't need latches, the drawer stays in place.

Inside the top cover I have space to store all out dishwashing soap, sponges and cloths.

I had to lift the basin and reroute the pipes, but its almost at a better height now than before.
    All stainless steel.

    I'm glad its over now

    Patent pending...
