    Default V8 Transplant

    Hi Guys
I will be tranplanting a V8 from a Disco 2 into a Defender TD5. The Td5 engine complete with harnas will be for sale soon. Various other parts will also be available, the complete Disco 2 will be sold as well excluding the engine and gearbox. The Disco will also donate her harnas to the Defender. I will keep this updated with some photos as I progress.
If any one is interested in spares please let me know.
I will also at a later stage provide a list of parts that becomes available.

There are so many hidden costs in doing a conversion and to go the route you suggest almost always become a nightmare and so much more costly, you can buy a complete D2 now for +- R65 000.00, now go see how much you are charged for only the reconditioned engine and then add the costs of all the extras needed.

Very interesting mod - I'd be quite interested however to learn the reasoning behind making this change?

We've just done this sort of thing now. We meaning my friend is building the vehicle and I supplied the motor and other bits and some tech advice.

A '93 Defender, some new PUMA bits and pieces, a ZF4HP24, a newly built 4.6 Thor motor and a full spitronics set to control everything.
So it will be a Defender 110 PUMA 4.6V8 auto when done 8)

Still sorting out wiring at the mo but gearbox, motor, plumbing etc all sorted.

Keep the Plumbing of the Disco II, it makes for 90% of the water circuit no problem.
Get a big radiator, BMW750i V8 radiator (for the 4.6)

We used the older TC from a '96 P38 which gives a stalling speed of under 1800 rpm. This means you have to combine the old style ring gear/flex plate to fit the old TC and the GEMS crank sensor holder with the new Bosch sensor. This gives a 36-1 count to work with.

Eben, what does a build like that cost +-, starting from scratch?
Galvanised chassis, newly sprayed body, new seats, 4.6 THOR, auto box, etc
Prpbably about R150k for a proper build?

Thing is, this was a fairly 'no expences spared' type of build because he is building this with a purpose and lotsa things are done with extra care and additional bits. See the sound deadning material all over.
Also the PUMA bits were not cheap. So your R150k is a tad lite

I would also do this thing by buying a donor vehicle complete, finish the job and sell what is left. Best would be to buy a busted D2 V8 for R25k or so and rebuild the motor. Then you know what you have and you can convert it to 4.6 in the same build.

I can get a 4.0 V8 currently running if anyone is looking

What Puma bits did he use?
I only recognise the load bay from a Puma.
Why not the Puma dash & aircon?

I can give you an idea of the drive train:

Gearbox is from Philip, R4k but you have to buy another one from a RRC or D1 to get the right output housing, so another R4k. (We wanted the HP24 and TL230 combo, so see what I mean with extra cost?)
    Transfer I supplied, R5k
Both modified and serviced - R3k
    The motor started as a running 4.0 - R15k
    A 4.6 crank and conrod set - R9k
Now full rebuild with T-top sleeves, gasflowed heads, full balanced bottom end and new pumps all over and viscous etc - R25k
Spitronics to drive the motor, gearbox and other bits (Tip-Tronic) - R6k
Oversize radiator with integrated oil cooler and AC ondenser (custom made) - R6k
Double knuckle front prop - R2.5k
    Refurbished axles - R5k
    4 pot calipers all round - R6k

If you see this thing for sale ... RUN for it!!

It started life as a '93 V8 CSW.
Replaced the firewall with a Td5 (not easy to find a Puma wall)

The entire back, roof, doors, fenders and bonnet is Puma.
Paint spec and decals are Puma. Except for the CRV4.6 that will be added to the rear 8)

It is as simple as you can get for bush use with DIY electronics so he will have spares and know how and what to do when there is trouble.

Would like to get a full Puma dash going to complete the look
