    Default 30 KZ-TE losing water

Im writing this with some dread and can feel the burning hole in my pocket..... I hope this is a worst case scenario and not fact.

Ive noticed my radiator needs quite a bit of topping up, up to 1lt at a time.. and Im fearing the worst, yep, the dreading cracked cylinder head.

My conundrum is that I purchased this vehicle just under a month ago, from a Toyota dealer, and they give the 1 month 1500km Warrenty.... now Im within the month, however, due to my excitement at having such an awesome vehicle I manged to put on well over the 1500km about 2500 actually...

On paper I know that Im outside of the Warrenty period... however, would it be unreasonable of me to approach the dealer and suggest/expect we strike a deal? possibly a 50/50 or something like that on repair works?

For those in Cape Town, Id really appreciate your experiences if you have experienced something like this.

BTW, I was gonna have the EGT installed just after the 30 day period.... and the intercooler in november.. (projected savings)

Also, check to see if there is water inside the cab, the result of a damaged heater radiator.

Thanks Jose, yes, I took the vehicle in yesterday, they will be doing pressure tests etc
Will they be able to pick up a leaking heater radiator that way?

Does the CPA not stipulate a 6 month warranty?

Are the coolant pipes very hard after driving? Is the radiator cap sealing correctly? I hope is it just a leak somewhere.

Well, just got the call from Toyota. everything points to the Cylinder head issue. They are trying to get the guys from Automark (on the same premises) to hear their take on the story, and also to figure out who what is gonna pay the R31 000 that the repairs will cost.
Im anxiously waiting for their response, as this will determine my next course of action. Which I really hope will not be neccessary..

    Let's put things in perspective.

    Cyl Head - R3,500
    Populating the head - R3,000
    Cyl head set - R1,000
    Consumables - R500

    Total - R8,000

Can I change that head for you......

WOW, This is deja vu. I thought this only happens to me.

I bought my Prado KZTE from a well respected private owner. A month after the deal was sealed I started having the same symptoms. Could not find a water leak, water in oil, oil in water, water or oil in exuast. Presure test at Silverton Radiators was also inconclusive.

Eventually, after many water fillups, and with a heavy heart, took it in for a check and turned out to be a cracked head. Some expert explained to me that the water leaked onto the piston and evetually disappeared as water vapor through the exuast.

All in all R14 000 later with a reconditioned block, cylinder sleaves, cylinder head ect...

Listen to Henris you do not need to pay an arm and a leg.

I really know what you are going through and hopefull can give you some hope. My story turned evetually good and I have spend many km's in bush, mountain, trail and on road and once fixed I never look back or regret buying (must still earn his name) in the first place.

I have shouted, threatened with court and even stood on my head and wistled Sarie Marais but eventually gave up. Maybe I should not have given up but to go through all that is not healty. This was before CPA.

Approach them professionally and respectfully and you might be suprised. If not...
If you have the time, effort and endurance I strongly suggest to research the CPA laws, small claims court and seek expert advise.

Good luck, I will think of you, and remember even the largest problem have a deadline.

Henris Sir, I have thought of this option as well, as I know Toyota has reasonably overinflated prices. Even SAC had a price of just over R21K

The workshop manager at Toyota also seems to think it has the incorrect radiator fitted as well..So they want to replace the radiator as well.

Pradonut I hear you. I have explored the avenues of the CPA should need be, Im waiting on them for an answer.
I will however fix it in the meantime should it be a battle, and then take them on..

Ive decided to approach this with a level head, and not to get too emotional.

So they admit to selling you a car with the wrong radiator fitted before the head cracked

I think it strange that they didnt pick this up when they checked the vehicle, the never vehicle never overheated with me, so Im guessing the head cracked with the previous owner.
On friday the guy that sold me the car is trying to track down the previous owner to ask if he knew about the head. to me it makes no difference, my car still needs to be fixed. gonna lean on them today though.
I need some timelines and answers..

    Hi
Sorry, Yes, this has been resolved, I got my Hilux back mid December, they replaced the Cylinder head, and got a year Warrenty. Im happy, She goes well, great power and doesnt use a drop of water or oil...
I cant do anything mechanical to the vehicle until the warrenty expires, then Im fitting intercooler and EGT..

It has been frustrating, but the manager changed and the new guy was a bit more proactive..
    So it ends well...

The previous Owner admitted to fitting a new radiator, and the Garage that did the work was also approached and they said what work they carried out.. so initially they thought the radiator cap, then they flushed the system, etc, couldnt find issues, then I went to Langebaan, and the following morning, two litres of water had to go in...

So ja, they stepped up and fixed it, so Im happy...
