    Hi there Guys

I am leaving JHB on my first cross border self drive, any advise on the best border post to cross at, we will be staying over in Francistown on the first night. I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the least busiest border that is not far off our route.

    Any advise will be appreciated.

    Thanks!!!

Chappies, if you want to stay on tar, then Groblers Bridge is the obvious choice. It is one of the larger border crossings, but I have used it before and it is not too bad.

Your other choice is to head west and cross at Stockpoort. This is normally very quiet, but will leave you with some 50 km's on dirt road before joining back onto the B147. I did this route in 2009 and the dirt road was fine then.

Your third choice is to head east and cross at the Zanzibar border post. From T4Africa, it looks like this is a tar route all the way. In the rain season you have to check if the Limpopo is in flood, in which case you cannot use this crossing. Conditions permitting, this is the route that I will take myself in September - purely because I have never driven on those roads before and it is another line I can draw in on my map!

    Have fun.

Chappies, also look at the different times that the border posts are open.

Nanie, I did the Khutse - Xade leg in June and wil not do it again.

It is a very slow 270Km and although we knew that we'd have to push hard to make Xade the same day, still ended up 60Km short of Xade 30min before sunset. From Xade was another 70Km to Piper for us before we really started experiencing some wildlife.

We saw NO animals in this stretch and I got really boring apart from the millions of bumps in the road that really slows you down. We lost some valuable tinned beverages in the fridges due to this!

Also prepare yourself for endless Km's of scratching of your vehicle. I still haven't managed to get rid of mine but I quite like the character now!!

You can spend a lot more time in the Khutse reserve as it does have a lot to offer.

Use it, don't use it :-)

    Hi Christaan,
Currently you can take NO red meat or fruit over the border.
Depending on where you are crossing the border, there are a few nice places to buy meat in Botswana.

Also, there are some restrictions within the country on fruit and veg due to fruit fly control. For example, friends of mine had their tomatoes confiscated at the vet fence near Selebi Phikwe 2 weeks ago.

What about wood, I have stacks and stacks of nice wood at my house and I heard you cannot gather wood in the reserve.

Wood should be targeted even more than meat as can surely carry disease, but I've never heard of firewood being confiscated
