In die winter is muskiete nie aktief nie. So, as jy hierdie skoolvakansie gaan, nee. In die somer is dit 'n ander storie.

Ai yai yai - no. Mosquitoes are always active, especially in the Chobe/Moremi/Linyanti area. All it takes is one bite and and you could have malaria. Don't even think of going to Bots north of Gaborone and not taking prophylaxis. There have been exceptional rains this year and the mozzies will be there - remember that the female of the species is silent, and more deadly, and she carries falciparum, so saying that "we didn't even hear a single mozzie" is like saying "not a single lion cased out our camp in the CKGR". Please, please don't be mal arias.

That's to put it mildly Please people, listen to Tony and don't take chances. If it's malaria area, it's 365 days a year. I have yet to see any written piece on malaria that says it only occur at certain times of the year.

    Smile Nxai Pan Reservations

I tried all the links offered on this thread to no avail. Eventually got the following from a safari operator in Maun - Xomae Group 0267 6862221. I googled them and made a reservation.

look, i am not saying "don't drink your pills" but I have seen very few mozzies in Moremi and Chobe (believe it or not) and I have been to those places probably 20 times. Funny enough it is often at the dry places that one find more mozzies (e.g. Senyati and Savuti).

I have read books on malaria and they say the higher risk areas are in towns (e.g. Maun and Kasane) where there are local school children (they get bitten in class under the desks). The one book also said that the anopheles mosquito can only breed well if the temperature does not go below 20degrees.

I might also add that I have never taken pills when going to Bots and I have also never gotten malaria there (I also do not sleep over in the towns; but if I do I will rather take the pills.)

Good day everyone, whilst accepting that this forum is based on freedom of expression, I cannot leave post #89 unchallenged.

I sincerely hope that no-one takes this advice. It is frankly irresponsible not to take malaria prophylaxis in Chobe and Moremi. For those wanting further information, have a look at this sticky which was drawn up in the hope of squashing such misinformation. http://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/...ad.php?t=87950

If still in doubt consult your nearest Travel Clinic.

Regarding the use of malaria tablets, I've been diving in Sodwana and Mozambique for many years and have taken malaria tablets only in the very beginning. It however made me sick and I therefor decided to rather use Peaceful Sleep. In 18 years, I have never had a problem with malaria

    I agree with you Stan.

People for all over the world read these pages for advice on travel to Africa. It is irresponsible in the extreme to advise anyone visiting not to take Malaria prophylaxis.

Perhaps the mods should think about censoring irresponsible advice that could result in the death of a visitor.
