Our first cold day of the year. 4 degrees. Went out to take photos of the frost on the farm. We were fortunate to have no frost. Sun just starting to warm up Kaapsehoop Mountain top.

Peter your last set of images are really special. To get that much detail on the guide without blowing out the background is not something that just happens that's for sure and the campfire ,Wow! Would you care to share the stories of the shots? I for one would learn from it.

    Thank you Keith.

The guide photo is fairly heavily post-processed (by my standards anyway). While shooting the scene, I was carefull to use base ISO (as dynamic range drops off quickly as ISO is increased) and not to over-expose the sky (-0.7 stops of exposure compensation), and afterwards I made the sky even darker and the foreground lighter using Lightroom.

The fire shot follows almost the opposite approach. Firstly, to get the stars to show as dots rather than lines, one has to limit shutter speed in proportion to effective focal length (if one gets technical you can also consider the camera's resolution). In this case I could go to about 30 seconds. I also kept the lens wide open (f4) in order to capture as much light as possiible but to capture stars, I still had to elevate the ISO to 1250. At this point, there is not much dynamic range left and noise is already a big enough issue that one wants to do as little exposure adjustments in post-processing as possible, so I spent about half an hour slowly killing the fire untill I got the result I was looking for.

    Default Fooling around

First time fooling around a bit with a big stopper. Had to use the big stopper with a 85mm lens and yes the 85mm is more of a portrait lens but the big stopper does not fit my 14-24mm.

The workflow was LR for normal quick adjustments then exported to NIK's Define 2 for noise correction and the BW was converted using Silver Effects Pro 2. I then edited both the versions in On1's Perfect Photo Suite doing Dynamic Contrast only. Editing time for both was about 5 min.

File size increased from the original 74MB Nef file to the final PSD of 827MB

I have taken a few nature shots but not with a fancy camera. Sony Z3 phone was used to take these photos.
