Hmmm . . . Looks like nobody has used the road. That tells me something too. Probably it is indeed in a bad condition. What else can I do to find out?

First weekend in July will be traveling in the area and I would like to know what the condition of the road is. From Empangeni to Melmoth the road is apparently damaged by coal trucks. Is that so? How bad is the damage and how is the it further on to Babanango. How far is Forth Marshall from the tar road? The stretch between Nqutu and Dundee has apparently lots of domestic animals on it. Is it so? How many hours will it take from Empangeni to Dundee? My father in law said, I will be better off if I drive all the way down to Durban on the N2 then on the N3 and then N11. What do you think? I will be driving with my t5 Combi, in case it is relevant.

Thanks Kobus. Good idea. I see the May issue of 'Drive Out' has a short mention of this very same route on page 68. But they don't say much about the road condition other then 'some parts of the tarred road has enormous potholes'.
Road from Empangeni to Melmoth is not too bad. Pot holes are being repaired once in a while. Lots of heavy trucks on the road. From Melmoth to Babanango, there were quite a lot of potholes. We worked in Babanango last year. Road is also used by heavy trucks transporting coal from Dundee to Richards Bay. Dont be in a hurry if you go that way, as trucks are somtimes not easy to pass.
Why not Empangeni - Melmoth - Vryheid - Dundee.![]()

If you fly or drive to an anti-Fracking meeting, you have no business being there and you wont get my ear......
I did that trip a few times last year. It is faster to drive to Durban and the Ladysmith to Dundee. You can do Stanger Greytown as well, but it's vey dependent on cane trucks slowing you down. Horrific driving happens on that road too.
I would like to visit the 'Prince Memorial Monument' near Nqutu, as well as Forth Marshall. But if the road is so bad, we will pass this time aroundI don't mind driving behind a slow truck however, I don't feel like changing tires with 3 kids in the combi and a wife already bothered by my interest in historical places . . . Anyway, TX for the replies to you all
