Default Re: X140 customizing - my extension box

I learnt a lot from the related threads and posts - many thanks to all.
I recently started my own extension box build.
It is constructed fully from aluminium.
I used Connect-it blocks for the frame thus no welding hassles.
The compartments are from tread plate and provide all the stiffness required for the side loads.
I used hundreds of rivets, 4.8x10mm
My extension box design has a long central compartment for the ladder and tent poles. This was one of the deciding factors for building my own vs the Jurgens box. The other is that I think their 4-drawer layout is not so useful.
    Discoveries along the way:
    - it is not as cheap as expected. R7000 in fact. This is the same price as buying the Jurgens box from Comet Caravans in Boksburg but cheaper than the R12000 from Campworld Jurgens in the Western Cape - shocking but true. I can provide a cost breakdown if anyone wants it but here are the biggest cost items.
-----My build has 7 doors thus 14 hinges and latches. R1700
    -----Treadplate R1300/sheet - I used 1 and 2/3 - lucky to get the 2/3 piece for R400 - so R1700
    ----- 25mm sq tube 5 lengths R1111
    - There is a weight saving. My build weighs 42kg. The old roofrack is 43kg and the lid is 37kg. My figures could be a little off. There was no way I could get on the bathroom scale while holding the roofrack. So I used a luggage scale and lifted each end of the roofrack and reached a total. Theoretically this works. Same process for the others.

    AWESOME JOB Afdak!!!!!!

When I built my extension box (very far up in this thread) I opted for one open space. It helped with packing of a lot of bigger items like chairs, etc. With the planning of buying the new trailer in October I was thinking of getting the extension box. I understand it does not necessarily work for everyone, but made sense to me.

I do however have a concern in your build......
    * When the tent is on and pitched, does the bottom part of the tent cover not hinder the doors on the fridge side to open?
    * Did you make provision for an opening on the room side to access the cupboards? I found in my previous one that if you leave that flap zipped open it causes a lot of wind and cold air (in colder months) to enter the room.

Other than that I have to say "Job well done"!!!!! You definitely putting my mind into consideration mode

Karel, you had me worried so I fitted the tent base and tent today.
-The doors just scrape past the aluminium edge of the base. I could have given the doors less overhang but thankfully it works as is.
    - The bedroom cupboards can be accessed via the flap which will normally be closed.
Busy closing the front and back and doing internal bulkheads.
    Will post pics when finished.

    Hi Guys,

So my big modifications will start next week...

Attached is a couple of pictures of what I am planning so far.

I am pondering the idea to have the top drawers overlap the wheel arch on the tent side. This is to allow easy access into the drawers from the room side (and hopefully with a bit of luck i will be able to keep the cold wind out...).

Except for the odd look, do you guys think i will run into other problems?

That will help your bed being stronger. I had to replace the base of the Howling moon TTT because it broke due to the overhang

    Hi Guys
Where do I get a 3kg gas cylinder holder for this xt140 trailer? For the life of me I cannot find one and Campworld claims the only two sizes which are available. The 3 kg cylinder does not fit!!!! The 3kg cylinder is the most popular is it not?

Hi Landslide, I have never seen gas bottle brackets for sale for any cylinders smaller than the old no 7 (7 lbs). However, Wineland 4x4 in Somerset West custom made me a bracket for a no 4 (4 lbs) which is very close to the new 3kg cylinder. They cost was the same as the large bracket though...

Hi Landslide, I had the same issue originally with the XT. I bought the 7lbs brackets form Campworld. I then put my 5kg Cadac bottle sin the campcover canvas covers and they fitted very nice into the brackets. Another option I was exploring was to buy the front runner bottle holder which is in a way universal and fit that onto the back. You will see you get a bottom or rear mount bracket in the front runner range. Hope this helps. Karel
