Is 'breeboors' so important that we loose sight of trip for the destination.

    Bigfoot,

Let me explain it this way. You get people who like to walk for exercise. Then you get people who like to do hiking trails. And then there is the mountaineers. For the walkers, it is about the walk. For the hikers, it is about the experience, the outing. And for the mountaineer, it is about conquering a mountain.

The same applies to 4x4ing. You get those that just like to fool around with their 4x4s for the fun of it (trail riders/compititions). Then there are the overlanders, and finally the more serious 4x4'ers - they are the mountaineers of the 4x4 family.

The Baboons Pass was one of the few mountain challenges. It was like climbing Kilimanjaro, or Everest, or something like that. Something special.

That is what makes 4x4'ing so special. There is something for everyone. I love all three aspects of 4x4'ing, and am thankful to have had the opportunity to take on the Baboons in all its former glory.

However, now it will be accessible for the general overlanders to experience it as well. Now, that is awsome too.

Lets enjoy the opportunities available to us.

    Jean,

Your explanation is so right, at the time when I wrote the reply maybe I was being a bit selfish as well, but my only wish was that more of us could enjoy a route so highly spoken and written about.

Uhm, my understanding is and it looked like, the road was only repaired to get easier access to the school/village and I find it hard to belief it was fixed to make it easier for the South Africans in their fancy 4x4's.

Time to go find baboons 2... and I think I know where to look. There was an old road that runs North at Roma and loops up and around to Ramabanta. I managed about 300m of it a few years ago but realized it wild be dark before I got much further and turned back. I'll try find it on Google earth.
