Angry Blombosch 4x4 - HUGE Dissapointment!!!

We went to the Blombosch 4x4 trail at Yzerfontein on the West Coast this past Saterday and what a huge dissapointment and waste of my time and fuel!!

The trail is advertised on their website as a Grade 1-3, the problem here is that it is just a Grade 1, that's it! When you enter the "trail" there is a board that tells you that you must deflate now to 1.5bar and engage low range. I did not even bother doing this and only put it in 4wd high range so that the 4wd drive train could stretch it's legs again. I could have done it in 2wd. A bloody Fiesta could have done it. We were'nt even half way and my wife started to fall asleep.

Another huge dissapointment of this "trail" (I dont want to call it a trail because it is literally just a 2-spoor plaas paadjie), was the half way picnic spot called Aap-se-Gat. This is a very good name for it because it is truly a monkey's ass of a place! I will not even stop there and eat my lunch inside my vehicle. The braais are over grown with brush and there is a man made pool/dam full of dark smelly stagnant water right in the middle. Not inviting at all.

The only wild life we saw was one lost ostrich that ran infront of us in the road for most part of the way. There are some cows, but I doubt it if they count as wild life. There is just bush and some more bush and cow dung to see!

The reason why I am so pissed is that this trail is advertised as a 4x4 trail and graded 1-3. There is nothing 4x4 about it and nothing close to grade 3. This I feel is a blatant way of milking the 4x4 market by false advertising. Then to top it all off I had to pay to have driven this plaas paadjie. The cost is R150 per vehicle, I only paid R142 because they did not have change to brake two R100's and we ended up scrambling for loose coins.

Some may think I am being rude or over reacting, but this is my personel view based on my own experience. If you doubt me or have been there and have a different set of views, please let me know because I would like to know!?

My recommendation is to stay away from Blombosch. There is much better things to do with your time and money.

    Thx

I did a search now and I see what you are on about. No one I know has been there before so I was unaware of all the negative responses and experiences.
It was a quick unplanned decision to go there seeing we were in the area. Now I have warned all my friends to stay away!

Looking at the other posts, they go back years and still this place is ripping people off and has shown no signs of improving for the better. The possibilities are there for it to be a nice place to go and do real 4x4 whilst still catering for the soft roaders, but as it sits now even the soft roaders will get bored out of their minds!

Truly and uterly the most pathetic place calling itself a 4x4 trail!!

Same goes for Buffelsfontein, although you may see some more wildlife besides an ostrich.

No disrespect Simon, but if I wanted to go and see flowers I will look for a Flower Route or something similiar and go there to look at flowers and birds. If I want to go and do a 4x4 trail I will look for a place that offers just that and go there and expect some sort of 4x4 challenge.

BTW, there were no flowers and I still have to clean off the cow dung thats stuck to my mud flaps. Only dung flowers at Blombosch!

Still cant beleive they charge people R150 to do a farm road, I can do that for free here on my uncle's farm.

    Thx

Has the sentiment around Blombosch changed much since this thread?

Has anyone been there recently perhaps?

Nope, not that I know of.

A friend went last year, still the same old.

I see they advertise the route still as a Grade 1-3 in SA4x4 mag.

I would not go there again. Did it last year. No flowers did how ever get eaten by massive ants and mossies and all kinds of other things at that aap gat camp that looks like it is 150 years old never been maintained. There are little ponds there that i would not even touch with a 10 foot pole and not to mention the ablutions. To me if you charge R150 a vehicle at least maintain the place. Oh and the second half of the trail is a vehicle scratcher.

Not really looking for a serious trail, as I will only be 1 car so just a chilled scenic drive

    I have not been there.

Keagan BothaI just did blombosch last weekend, you can just drive in and there is a guy at the entrance to take your money. Very relaxed 2hr route, there are places to have a picnic, but it has not been maintained, so a little rustic. Beautiful area, for us bushlovers definitely still worth it. Probably rate difficulty at 2. (July 2017)

We camped in Yzerfrontein this past weekend and decided to do this trail just to get out in nature a bit, knowing that it isn't a real 4x4 trail as such. As mentioned before, it is still basically a two spoor sandy track and there is still no maintenance being done along the track with several sections feeling like a car wash as you go through the reeds. Ito wildlife, we had 3 flies enter the vehicle.

For R200 it was not worth it at all. Being out and about was nice for the first km, but there after you almost hoped to reach the end of the trail.

Helderberg Farm and Honingklip are two really good 4x4 trails not too far from Cape Town - they both have some challenging sections, but these are clearly indicated and can be bypassed if you feel they're a bit hairy for your current skill level. Honingklip also has a fine brewery and good restaurant
