Garmin Europe maps cost same as GPS

Anyone know of a cheaper way to get maps for Europe for a Garmin Nuvi? Europe City Navigator maps from Garmin cost over R1000, about the same as I paid for my GPS! I called Garmin to query this and the guy I spoke to actually suggested I buy a whole new unit in Europe with the Europe maps loaded. I am appalled that maps are so expensive that for one trip to Europe I am better off buying a whole new GPS unit!

Shame on you GARMIN. Should have bought TomTom, I saw a TomTom the other day with Southern Africa preloaded and a free SD card with Western Europe maps!

I am also interested and also heard today that this seems to be the cheapest option. Won't mind a new GPS unit but, if there is a cheaper option out there please advise.
