Getting back to PUW's statement that his friend finds the RAV4 2.2 diesel a better tow vehicle than the Amarok.
Now, before I go further, no one is saying the Amarok is not a great tow vehicle.

    The stats;

    RAV4 2.2 Diesel
    110kw @ 3600rpm
    340Nm @ 2000 - 2800 rpm
    Weight 1660kg
    Power to weight ratio 62

    Amarok Bi-Turbo 4 Motion
    120kw @ 4000 rpm - 5000 rpm
    400Nm @ 1500 - 200 rpm
    Weight 2083kg
    Power to weight ratio 58

So, assuming the boat is the same weight & all else is equal, the RAV4 should tow as good as, if not better than the 'Rok.
At 100km/h (in top) the RAV will rev at just under 2000rpm, the 'Rok at 1910rpm
At 3600 rpm the RAV produces, theoretically, 340Nm, compared to the 'Rok's 320Nm.
I say theoretically as peak outputs can only be achieved at sea level at full throttle...

So lower weight is largely where the RAV4 scores...

Again, I am not saying the RAV4 is a better tow vehicle or that the 'Rok is not good.
I'm just pointing out that the differences are much smaller than one would expect...
Factor in that the Rav 4 is a monocoque chassis with independent suspension and has an FF (front engine/front drive) layout with poor, frontal biased weight distribution, as well as notoriously soft and rolly-polly suspension, as well as lower ride height than the amarok, and you'll see that engine/power specs don't really make that much difference. You're comparing a car which has its body providing rigidity and each suspension corner moving and changing geometry with every bump in the road to a truck on a ladder chassis with near 50:50 weight distribution, a rear LSD in a solid axle with stiffer leaf springs, and regardless of power or torque, it's never going to be as good as towing.

    Default Oh Dear..

    132Kw @ 4000, 400 Nm from 1500 - 2250 Rpm an improvement of peak range by 250 RPM.

So Kw is up and torque the same, now peak over 750 Rpm instead of 500 of the 120Kw motor...

    Now for the popcorn...

For those who think the 2.0 Amarok is stretched, the latest incarnation of the BMW 2.0 diesel pushes out 160kw and will be here with the new X1.

Despite my statement, I would still rather use the amarok to tow.

[QUOTE=grips;1137285]I have read the comments on the 8 speed auto gearbox of the new Amarok. ZF has always build some of the best gearboxes available. I am sure that the wide ratio choice will do the Amarok good. It is specially designed for economy. It might do good in off - road conditions but you but cannot beat a transfer case. You got 8 speed with the Amarok. If we take the new Ranger 6 speed auto and ad its transfer ratios you have a choice of 12 ratios. The first low on the Amarok is not as low as suggested have a look at the ratio comparison below.

    Amarok ZF 8HP ratios
    1st gear 4.696
    2nd 3.160
    3rd 2.104
    4th 1.667
    5th 1.285
    6th 1.000
    7th 0.839
    8th 0.667
    R 3.300

    Ford Ranger 6R80
    1st 4.17
    2nd 2.34
    3rd 1.52
    4th 1.41
    5th 0.87
    6th 0.69
    R 3.40

    Ford Ranger Transfer ratio
    2.02 low range
    1st 8.42
    2nd 4.73
    3rd 3.07
    4th 2.84
    5th 1.78
    6th 1.39
    R 6.89

Yes diff ratio`s do differ but it is about available gearbox ratios . If you do this caculation wit a 4 speed auto with low range you still beat the Amarok with available ratios. Wonder how you are going to reverse out of a real tight spot with a 3.300 ratio. You can never beat a transfer case off- road. 8 Speed may be better for the open road but having a look at you last ratios ( 8th and 6th ) for the boxes I doubt. A real granny 1st like in some older boxes have ratios of about 6.7 to 8.0 but the t – case has still the advantage.

I had a 2008 Ford Ranger 3.0 tdci 4x4, the low range was too fast, especially when climbing out of river beds in damara land with a laden vehicle, and having cooper 265/75/16 stt's. I actually purchased a secondhand t-case and modified the crawler ratios and fitted this to my vehicle, was much better. Too slow and the vehicle would stall, too fast and we would be bouncing all over the place. Fortunately Ford has rectified that and if I am not mistaken, they have the slowest crawler gear around, closest rival is the landy puma, with a marginally faster 1st low.

    Default TDI vs TSI

So drove the TDI and the TSI back to back this past weekend. On the open road (freeway) driving, TDI has the better pull in top gear.

Robot to robot stuff, the TSI kills it. In pure get up and go from 0 to 100 type style, it is TSI all the way.

In town driving, the TDI just kills me with the freaking short gear changes, it is a very busy car to drive, the TSI, whilst also a 6 speed box is just so much easier, it appears to have longer gearing.

Going from any of the main stream 5 speed diesels to the Amarok TDI will require a different driving style in town, as one changes gears so frequently, open road in top gear is not an issue.

Once again, the ride comfort and bumpy road handling is the top vehicle in its class, not one comes near, the Ford likes to wag its gat in the place where the Rok is stable!

The short throw gearbox is a minor adaption and so is the clutch, which is quite "grabby".

The brakes are great, however I do not like the long pedal movement before the anchors arrive, just an adaption over time I feel.

The TSI just blew me away, really impressive.

Default 132Kw Manual - Test Drive

    Hi Riaan

Battling to add pic's but to note that the only visible differance is the locking tailgate - nothing else has changed. For me its the drive thats just better, difficult to explain but it pulls with that little bit of extra urge, gear changes are smoother(not that the 120 is bad but this is just better), even pulls away easily in 2nd gear - Understanding that it only had basically 5km on the clock and I could only do a short trip. Now I want myne.

Just a note, there is a 132kw 4 motion(reflex silver, leather and std 17" mags) available if anybody is looking.

Became the owner of 2012 VW Amarok 132kw DC Reflex Silver 4 x 2 on the 14th of June 2012 after cancelling my TSI order. So far it has been a pleasant experience except for the one front fog light and some problem the rubberizing guys caused. Was resolved very quickly though by the dealership. Now just to get a canopy on the Rok, but I actually like it without the canopy, but going to need it.

Still on first tank of fuel after filling it up after taking it home
