Getting back to the 132 auto.

How exactly will the 8 speed work? I dont want to go and read up on it as I think you okes will give me a better understanding. Is it 8 gears inclusive of the lowrange or what?

Nope - no low range! (O, shikes - here it comes!!!) They use lower than ussual ratios for 1st and 2nd gear - together with adaptive engine management and - combined with controlled slip on the torque converter - achieve the ideal ratio and torque to take it where low range would take it. This is simmilar to the systems they used succesfully in other 4motion products.

slip on the torque converter in my mind equates to eventual overheating when you need it most on a difficult trail......

I am sure VW would have thought of this when they designed the cooling of the box, just like they would have taken the bigger stress on a small motor with high output in account when they designed the little 2 liter!

look im not dishing the idea/concept of VW, we all now they are brilliant with these complicated things but with the concept there will always be a chance for overheating. same with braked traction controll systems.

O okay cool. So you will have very low gear ratios in 1/2 gear and then a NORMAL 1st gear as 3rd. Makes sense.

So you will only use 3-4-5-6-7-8 when driving on Tar? Or is 8 including the reverse?

Will the car be set in 3rd and then start there everytime for highway city driving?

Will it be called 3rd or 1st?

    Lekker klomp vrae, thanks Vosman!

I think the tech is fantastic, I really do, but I can only see a repeat of the D3's when these are 4 or 5 years old and the warranty's finished, people will be reluctant to buy 2nd hand because of fixing all the tech and the resale will reflect this?? We will have to wait and see??

I think the 8th gear is also a over drive...

Will be interesting to see how it performs...

If its the same as the other Vollas then its 8 forward gears, numbered 1-8 and reverse. The control system decide which gear to use on pull-off, depending on circumstances. It would then also have an off -road switch which changes the way the box works. As I said - apparently it works very well and the changing is very smooth - to the extent that the driver are not always able to tell which gear is engaged. I also heard that it gears back when you slow down - like on the Pajeros.

Has anybody, besides Manny, read the May issue of LW - there should be more info in that article WRT the box?

In the mean time, I'm watching the international forums to see when the first one hits the road - probably in the UK or Germany.

The article does not say anything more than what we have read on the internet except that it mentions an 8-speed DSG box, which it is not. Furthermore the 8-speed is on VW's German website, already available since January this year. (www.vw.de)

If I am correct it is not a DSG gearbox, but something else (can't remember the name now).

Is it the ZF unit that's been in use by Chrysler for a while now?

More recently also in the Touareg.

Yes, of which over 1 million units have to date been built (for those who will come with their their "unreliability" rants again).
