Default Blackmarket diesel still available in Malawi??

When we passed through malawi around 6 months back there was no diesel available at the pumps but one could easily buy on the blackmarket out of 44 gallon drums smuggled in from Moz at around $2 per litre.

It is apparently not considered illegal as even had a police escort to direct to the blackmarketers haven....

Has anyone been through very recently and know about diesel availability etc?

    thanks

we went through malawi in Dec - I wish we had paid US$2 a litre for black market stuff! My mate needed diesel and he paid slightly less than I paid for petrol and I had to fork out R30 a litre for 20 litres! Normal prices are over US$2 a litre from the pumps. I know the president recently snuffed it and he was the main cause of the limited Forex they need to buy their fuel in with, but he hasnt been gone nearly long enough to remedy their problem. The main problem with black market stuff is worrying about the stuff they mix with the fuel!

We ended up driving from the lake into Mozambique to fill everything up as we were going to be there for 12 nights and had towed a load of toys with us to play around with on the lake and we WERE going to use them!! Went through dedza border post and got fuel about 40km inside Moz. Fuel there is also over US$2 a litre!

Rather take as much fuel with you as you can possibly carry - the malawi borders are usually not too sticky with tourists bringing lots of fuel into the country - we must have had about 10 Jerry cans of fuel when we came back into Malawi - they didnt even ask! but it was a nice quiet border post and shortest route to the lake through from SA through Zim and Moz. Also an amazing mountain pass decent to the lake!

    Default blackmarket diesel

Thirstytraveller. You are right it wasn't 2 U.S. per litter. what i meant was 2 u.s. over the pump price which was around 360 kwacha per litter or roughly a 1.50 U.S. if you change on the black-market.

I had no problems with the quality but then again i drive a SAMIL 20 which i think is less fussy than the average vehicle

In May, the Malawi Kwacha was devalued, which led to large price jumps in the country. Petrol now costs 490 kwacha / liter, Diesel 564 L / Kwacha. For this relaxed now the fuel crisis. Diesel and gasoline are now available nationwide.

A quick google suggests that the price Pierre gives is still current

    Petrol per litre = 606.30 MKW = $1.78 = 16.09 ZAR
