All drums that contained foodstuff will have a lining.
Drill all your holes etc and once you're ready to begin assembling, send the drum for sandblasting.

Remember that you need to paint ASAP after sandblasting.

In SA we have the following paint colours to choose from.

    Black, Black and Black

For the lid you can use a red engine paint or similar.

Ek kry nie my oond laer as dit nie. Daar is dalk te veel oop gate. Design/Manufacturing error.

So 105 C is gelukkig nie te warm nie.

Kobus, the Weber Smokey Mountain has the vents at the bottom and the one in the lid. It also has the water pan which acts like a heat sink. In respect of the WSM, these affect temp stability:

    1. Water Pan
    2. Seasoned (some guys clean theirs after every smoke, some dont. The donts report better heat stability)
    3. Location, in direct sunlight, can increase temps. In the sun, mine sits at @ 50c, sufficient without coals, to make same day biltong and droewors
    4. Breezes/wind can also affect temp stability.

There is a great FB page: Fans of the Weber Smokey Mountain which contains a lot of tech info which would or should be applicable to UDS.

    .

Ons maak gereed. So paar stukke mopanie.

Finally have some time to build one.

Here is my design, based on a stolen idea:

    I'm making a few changes:

    - The top drum will be cut in half horizontally and the top and bottom cut edges reinforced with angle iron: I saw this guy struggled to reinforce the top hatch
    - this angle iron frame then forms a structure for side shelves and handles, as well as a receptacle for the removable grid
    - the bottom vents will be water pipe, nipple fittings, elbows, and ball valves
    - the top grid can then be a full width removal double decker: angle iron and round bar
    - the drum will get two 10mm threaded-rod axles welded onto angle iron which is then welded to the bottom rim and then 4 rubber wheels offset outwards far enough that the heat soak doesn't melt them
    - I'll use one of the top lid threaded holes to mount a chimney which will also get a ball valve

I'll start a build thread once I start. Point 1 above (horizontal cut) MIGHT change as the drums I have are fitted with removable lids.........which means I first have to weld the lids to the drum........

From pic two you can see that we cleared up the weld on the bottom seam.
