Hi Jelo, I've used a QD32ETi successfully on a LR conversion, without ECU. Used the TD27Ti mechanical injector pump and it works well. Really enjoying the 405Nm @ 1600 rpm! Of course that's with uprated intercooler and modified pump.

This isn't an easy job. But yes, you can use any 4 cylinder Nissan mechanical IP as long as it has turbo boost compensation and can flow enough diesel.

Nice engine, but too powerful for a Defender, IMHO.

I've hear rumours of ppl putting in an X5 3.0 diesel motor...apparently a bolt-on job apart from the electronics which requires some work...

No it isn't, but if you read the reports of the GM V8 diesel conversions, they ALWAYS have cooling problems. Not sure if that is just poor planning or a characteristic of the motor, but there are better options out there.

Yes well not really. You'd need a LOT of work on the electrics and you'd probably need the BMW gearbox as well.

There was a lot of cross-over of the Range Rover and the X5 models, but also a lot of parts from the E39 5-series.

"The BMW E53 is the first-generation BMW X5 mid-sized crossover SUV. It was produced from 1999-2006[2] and has been replaced by the BMW E70. The E53 was developed at a time when BMW still owned Land Rover and as such shares many components and designs with both the Land Rover Range Rover L322 model (specifically the Hill Descent System and Off Road Engine Management system) and the BMW E39 5-series (specifically engines and electronic systems). The entire in-car entertainment system (Radio Function, Navigation System, Television and Telecommunications systems) are shared with other BMWs and L322. As a result the X5 model earlier models and L322 can be easily upgraded with the newest BMW technologies.[3] there is a limited model with code name "1150", 1000 cars for USA and 150 cars for Germany the difference was in performance with 281 hp in 3000L models"

I think there are easier and cheaper options, IMHO.

I have fitted a Lexus vvt v8 to my td5 110 Defender excursion vehicle which is heavy!this conversion is a compromise, not ideal. Stick to diesel for a heavy vehicle. Expect 15l/100 kms!!.I have a adaptor and shaft fora1uz I want to sell-brand new never used R2000.

    What engine is that?

Almost completed now, the 3c fits quite nicely into the Defender bay.
I got my inspiration from the attached article and also from a friend who runs one in his Hilux DC. He tows his ski boat to Moz quite often and manages 8/L. It pulls the boat with relative easy at 120. Town driving gives around 10/L.

The nice part about this conversion is no bellhousing changes required.
One pipe to be shortened for the PSP. Standard V8 radiator used.
Only small problems are the turbo outlet pipe, needs modification, and sump need to be modified slightly.
Engine mounts obiously need to change, but no welding on the chassis needed.

Will they also work on a newer defender td5?

Is it not 2 much power for the driveline?

I personally think that 2.8 Cummins Diesel in the Foton Tunland is just what a Defender needs. At 120 kW and 360 Nm torque - just perfect. Nice torque curve as well.

Dont know if its been mentioned but you can buy a kit in the UK to fit a bmw 3.0 straight six diesel into a defender.

Includes adaptor to gearbox, clutch and stand alone ecu. The std landy intercooler and radiator apparently work fine.

yep, I was going to mention the M57 option

    https://www.onlinegearboxparts.com/p...0-adaptor-kit/

Apparently Rakeway do the MT82 Puma box adapter kit. I can't find anything on their site.

Another option is the Merc OM606 which seems to becoming popular as well but we never got the turbo diesel version in ZA.

I dropped into a site by accident a while ago and the opinion there was that the engines are all the same, structurally, with turbos added to spec.
I don't know how true it is, though.
