There is a bait that kills the whole colony that I use. Works a treat.
Do some swotting on it.

Never knew I had termites under my lawn..............never saw any movement nor damage........but then previously I had an active mole which subsequently since we started playing on the lawn (I pressume) moved away elsewhere - don't know if this has any relation whatsoever though........8)
Since beginning of this year I got myself a new buddy..........a Golden Retriever puppy (now 5-months old already) who has started digging every now and then and although I got cross in the beginning I started to see that wherever he dug into the lawn it was a termite nest...
So what does one do to get rid of the buggers?![]()
Don't want to put anything down that might be of any risk to Wrangler (yip.....it's a Jeep thing......) as I'm scared he might dig or snif where any poison is put down.........
........but I'm not happy having them around either.......
I've tried boiling water / jayes fluid combinations but that only kills a few and soon the colony or nest just pops out somewhere else.....
Any advice will be appreciated.......
Cheers and have fun.......always!![]()

It depends which ones they are. There are 2 types.
1.Small white (ant) looking termite
These are very dangerous i.t.o they can cause havoc on any wood etc in and around your house. They especially build these soil nests under kitchen cuboards etc and love to eat your skirtings. They dont like sunlight so you never see them.
There is only one way to get rid of them effectively and that is to drill holes and pump perstiside into these holes, especially around your house.I am no boffin, just had the problem and I was told what is what.
The product they used is called Merit (i think). They pumped a total of 800lt aropund my house to get rid of the colony,Thats how big they get.
2.The others are the carrier termites.A bigger darker termite that usually carries the loose twigs, grass etc into their nests. One night from about 8oclock,go outside and shine a torch in the area your grass is chowed, you will be surprised to see how many are carrying your grass away.
There is a pesticide that looks like grass/stick pieces. You sprinckle it around the hole and area wher they are. They carry the stuff in and kill the colony from inside.I have used it before and you will be surprised how fast your grass starts recovering again.
Well thats about as much as i know. All I can say is if it is the white ones make a plan, quickly. They ate out my whhole kitchen, nested behind all my skirtings and cost me 6k to get rid off.rather use the pros for these as they must give you a 5 year guarantee and it gives you someone to fall back to if they return.
Another intersting thing the guy told me was to watch when you have a "flying ant" swarm after the rains "reis miere".They tend to go straight to the nests when they land on the ground.Aesy to follow them and spead some insectiside there.
I recently put down some Kamakaze. A twig like bait, similar to the one mentioned. If it does not work, I have been told that one puts a fumitab under a bucket at one of the holes. You then start plugging the holes as the fumes start escaping from holes. The closest holes first and then further.
Luckily I only have the Carrier or Cutter termites. So it is only my lawn. If it does not get better within 60 days I am getting a Pest Control Officer.

Thanks guys.........I only have the carrier / grass eating ones too....
Think I'll try the one Henri recommends..............also heard about Kamakaze but the Vet told me to stay away as it is not pet-friendly at all.

My advice, and I have used this many times over the years, just give them water, lots of it every day for a week or so. They don't like water and will move (or die, I am not sure) I just put the hosepipe in every hole I can see and pump it full.Originally Posted by Fisheagle

Mufie, tried that in a house we lived in a couple if years back. Filled the hole for four hour straight in three consecutive days. Could not fill the hole. :-/
Ouch, they must have been there for a long time. It works if you get them early...Originally Posted by WernerLouw79

Must have been an old nest. A new house into the mountain, in the outskirts of town. back then I just gave up. Decided I did not want a garden... Now I do.
Any advice on how to rescue my lawn after an infestation of the carrier termites (taking into account that winter is coming)??
They have already done significant damage.
My gut feel would be to treat the roots with "stikstof" but not sure if that is a good idea with winter approaching (live in Pretoria)
My lawn is suddenly dying in patches. All over the place its becoming yellow and brittle.
Which type of termite would build a mud layer onto wood above the ground and then crawl in underneath it ?
We have an old walking stick out side which I use when we braai, and the bottom part was covered in layer of mud with a few termites still on it. Ugly little white see through buggers.
My brother in law stays about 5 km away from me and he has the same issue. He has palm trees and they create mud nests at the bottom of the tree.

Insecticide. Go talk to the people at the nursery. Maybe take a few termites with you.
I wont easily mess with termites again. We had a bad infestation on the lawn and lost a few trees. We used a few bottles of Blue death to treat the affected areas. They disappeared for a while then reappeared in the living room. Fortunately we noticed them before they got into the rafters.
We paid Rentokill hansomely to drill and pump many drums of chemicals into the foundation of the two buildings. Perhaps there is sage advice from others with more experience, but my advice is pay someone to make this problem go away.

Surface treatment is actually more harmful - it only scatters the colony or colonies - they go into a sort of survival mode and enlarge the nest or find other areas to inhabit.
Identifying the nests and then drilling and injecting a termiticide into these areas is the only effective treatment for the subterranean nests and infested areas.
