    Default Squeaky? 4x4 wheel-sound 1st Gen Sportage

Hi Group, (1st Gen Sportage - Build : 2001 Nov)

When I engage 4x4, after a while, a 'squeaky' sound
emits from the front wheels, it sounds more
from the driver-side, maybe because I am closer to this side....

The 4x4 wheels lock&engage properly, no problems there.

Initially I thought it may be the front disc brake/pads, since it was rather worn. I have since replaced theses discs/pads, same 'squeaky' problem
when 4x4 is engaged. It sounds like a 'scratching twig'......
The sound is only audible after, say, a kilometer in 4x4.
btw, this is true for H&L 4x4 mode

When in standard 4x2 normal drive mode, no 'squeak'.....

I haven't taken the hubs apart to inspect, not
sure how difficult this may be, willing to do it
if it can be done with standard tools.

Have anyone experienced this or can you make
useful suggestions as to what the 'squeak' may be?

Hi Gerhard, sounds very much like a bearing noise. there is a needle roller inside the hub which may be the problem. This bearing runs on the half shaft which is why it only makes a noise when 4X4 is engaged. The removal of the hub can be done with standard tools, but removing the bearing may require a bearing puller.

Can you provide more detail about the noise?

Does it occur when the vehicle is stationary, or only when moving?
Does it occur when the suspension is working a lot (rough road) or also when on a smooth surface?
Does it increase in volume or pitch when the speed increases?

My kia occasionally has a squeak as well, which seems to be the control arm pivot - I just spray some Q20 on there and it goes quiet for a while. This only occurs when the suspension is working a bit, i.e. going over speed humps.

It also has a metallic rattle from the brake calipers when going over rough gravel.

    Hi Rynhard,
Only when moving, on a smooth road too, eg tar.
It is definitely a 'rolling' noise since the frequency of
squeaks increase with speed. It does not start immediately in 4x4 though, i guess within a kilometer. Leon suggested it may be a bearing problem
inside the hub. I still need to inspect and evaluate this.
During normal 4x2 mode, it is fine.

The cover that protects the disks from mud and water rubbed against my disc and made a similar noise to te one you are describing. Maybe worth the quick look, its easy to bend it a little further away from the disc.

I also only happened when in 4x4

Most of the things that rotate during 2WD and 4WD are the same at the front, i.e. wheels, wheel bearings, hubs, brake disks.

The only thing that I can think of being different in 4WD, is that the front differential will be driven, and the two half shafts. So maybe the squeak is coming from the front diff, or from one of the shaft bearings on the front diff?

rynhardth, that mechanical rattle you hear is probably from the disc pad anti rattle springs. I had the same noise even after fitting new springs. Just bend the springs so they clamp the pads tighter and the noise will go away. the noise mine emmitted drove me bonkers.

Thanks, will try that - my solution so far has been to close the windows and turn up the radio
