Exclamation Can a steering wheel break you finger?

This is something I allways cosiddred to be an urban myth / old wifes tale. well not any more.

After playing at Honingklip on Sat. I am living proof that it is not!

I have a spiral fracture of my fourth metacarpal (handbone). and need to wear a splint for atleast 4 week.

    What happened? my earlier rendition:

We played in the sandpit and while going doughnutting I exited the doughnut and the frontwheels bit into the sand. Dont know exactly what hapend but i first thought I snapped something on the Toy, but then suddenly felt the pain in my hand. The steering somehow snaped something in my hand. Mini-me (coena, my son) asked: Pappa wat het so geklap! so it was could be heard above the purr of the sweet smelling diesel going on full tilt!

Duck tape kept me going to recover the Landie and make it up a much easier redhill. but i was in agony. each gearshift and handbreak release was pure torture!

Now after suffering for 2 days I think that when the wheels bit into the wet sand the steering was riped out of my grip and spun round with enough force that when the spokes on the steering hit my ring finger it snapped the metacarpal bone.

So please be carefull! keep your fingers well out of the way of the spokes of your steeringwheel! you can get injured!

I felt/feel the same way as you do. While I could appreciate that a steering wheel may kick back I just felt it was a bit far fetched that it could kick back with sufficient energy to injure you.

Some cars are more susceptable to kickback than others. Getting hurt by a modern IFS with power steering is rather surprising.

    You big girl's blouse!!!!!!!

Take that cast off and stop moaning. Jeez, man up, Coenraad. That's not even displaced. If you do anything at all with it, you just tape that finger to the one next to it.

If we ever meet, take a look at my hands. I thought I went through my entire cricket career without breaking a finger, which isn't bad for a keeper, but it turns out I broke 5 or 6, including multiple fractures into the joints of one index finger. So, you take a paracetamol and get on. Take that cast off, go find a pair of gloves and ask someone to hurl something at you to catch. Then imagine that person is Andy Roberts, and that he's going to do it every day until the "break" (seriously?) is healed.

Jeez, Uys moaning that it's getting chilly on the bike, Coenraad moaning about a sore finger stopping him doing his paperwork..........I knew you lot had gone soft after watching your rugby team, but I didn't realise just how soft......

Not many remember the days WITHOUT power steering on big trucks. You can have yourself a broken wrist if the front tyre grabbed a kerb and the steering wheel got momentum like that.

    1. Mike this thread is not about the pain, being soft or moaning. It is to serve as waring that the RUMOUR about a steering wheel being able to break your finger is true! And not just an old wifes tale!
    2. for the record if it was up to me i would have gone on without the cast. but the dr advised against it. should the fracture displace then an operation would be the only option to fix it. the tinger is not dislocated the metacarpel is fractured!
    3. PS as to taking any pain killers: I do not take any.

Mike, if somebody breaks a finger erecting your tent or falls out in the middle of the night, do you have indemnity insurance.

You never know, us Saffers are getting soft from watching all those American TV shows.

I drove some farm tractors from the fifties and I can tell you they had a vicious kick back. The best was to let go of the steering wheel or else you could end up with more than one broken finger.

Oh, didn't I tell you? There is a breathaliser lock on the tent. It will only let you in if you're sober. That should cover most of the falling-out-the-tent issues.

Keep your thumbs 'on top' ... never 'inside' ... of the steering wheel that is
