Carel, I noticed that and enquired about it and was told they were all cut to fit and will not weaken the spring. I personally would like to have both bolts much bigger. Metalian who also use Burquip axles also had problems with those bolts snapping off. My previous conqueror trailer had much bigger bolts!

Ontdekker, yes you are correct. Just had a look at mine. Both sides are cut. The cut however is not into the real spring eye and will have no effect. Regards.

Well thanks for these posts! You guys had me crawling under my BL (again) with a flashlight, in my pajamas.

Met die gerondkruipery in die donker, is my boute fine, my boude nie. Mens moet dalk eers check dat jy nie in 'n doring gaan sit en dan opspring en jou kop teen jou BL kap nie. Dis ok tho, my bure het dit baie snaaks gevind.

Just to be clear I am not putting blame on Bush Lapa. I bought second hand and all they did was give it a service soon after I purchased.

The bolt does not look as though it was sheared as the end looks rounded. I will post a pic tomorrow of the old bolt as well as the replacement 12.9 same 8mm bolt that I installed today. The old bot is about 68mm whilst the housing is minimum of 70mm. The only difference in the bolt besides the length is the fact that it has a hex nut.

Just thought of something I never checked, should the spring have a bearing or does it just rest on the bolt?

For this reason Bush Lapa started drilling the bushes bigger to fit stronger ones than the standard ones. I got me the upgraded bolts but still need to fit them. Until then I check them often.

I think Bush Lapa and Burquip have something to discuss. What Burquip see as spec does not meet the African conditions. This count for the total axle setup.

When replacing, use a 10.8 strength bolt. A bit better than the 8.8 and should last better.

    So begin dit...

I am contemplating letting go of my trusty Miskruier. This is due to circumstances outside my control.

Any idea on pricing for well looked after Miskruier with about 10 000km, solar setup, gas geyser, custom bicycle carriers, full wing and sides and dirt road character?

B71, can not remember model year.

    So begin dit...

As mentioned yesterday herewith pics of the bolt as well as the replaced bolt with double nuts. Also showing how my springs were cut to accommodate the body.

On your last pic, it shows the nuts on the tyre side, shouldn't they be in the inside rather?

I could have put the bolt the other way around but felt that it was better to be able to see nuts if they come loose again.

Not sure the 10.8 will be better in this application.Me think it will snap easier under impact...less flexible.Going from 12mm to 16mm will help though.

Not sure the color indicates the strength. It is stamped on the head ie. 4.8,8.8 & 10.8.Bought a 8.8 black bolt today for R8.00.Will just replace my trailers bolts every 10000kms.

Be careful, 10,8 or even 12,2 is much stronger in tensile strength but also more brittle due to the hardness.

Metalian had the same drama with Burquip axles supplying the wrong bolts. Heinz did a recall and changed the bolts from 12 - 16mm 8,8 and fitted safety cables, no more problems

Thanks Henk!Did they supply 16mm bushes or did Metalian drill the 12mm bushes to fit?I don't like the drilling idea on the bushesDrilling the bracket is no problem....enough material available.

Yes, do agree on that Henk and others that confirmed. It does however seem that these bolts broke on the outside of the brackets, where the nut is supposed to be and that indicated to me tensile failure. Hence going for 10.8, but not higher.

If the 16mm diameter can be fitted without hassles and introducing other failure points, then that I agree on that as well.

The simplest might be to just replace these bolts at every 10 000km as suggested by someone else here. That then ensures you are actually inspecting the bolts and nuts and suspension components, not just looking at it periodically.

I wonder how many okes where on their knees and backs due to this discussion here?

    So begin dit...
