    Default Bakgatla Camp

Given the recent spate of negative media comment regarding the poor condition of camp sites in the Pilanesberg, can anyone provide an update of the state of the Bakgatla camp site with regard to ablutions and general camping comfort?

We spent one night there on 25 Feb. Private school half term so quite busy but the staff were all very helpful and friendly, the restaurant food was tasty (we treated ourselves to takeaway lunch around the pool), restrooms clean with hot showers, lots of liquid hand soap & toilet paper. Staff came to each site fairly early the next morning to empty bins and clean braais. All in all, a good experience. Suggest you book a site with power, then go all way around to the open area beyond the restaurant. Not nearly as congested; some lovely acacia trees and set against the kopje/hill. Enjoy it; it's a lovely, easy weekend away from Gauteng!

Thanks very much! Just got back. Ablutions nice and clean. Found the shady open area - brilliant. Definitely worth a re-visit.

We also got back from Bakgatla today.

    We enjoyed every minute!

Ablutions were cleaned throughout the day, braais cleaned every morning, hot showers, friendly staff...what more could you ask for.

    Alanm,
We stayed over at Bakgatla about 2 months ago, the facilities where the sites have electricity was fair(there was hot water and it was clean) and really poor in the area where the sites did not have electricity.

I haven't stayed for a while, but I still think you get good value for money. A lot quieter than Manyane, which has huge baboon problems.

I am fortunate enough to be allowed to sleep in the Park - no fences or toilets. Take guests for weekend trails and sleep under the stars in the wilderness area - not open to the general public.

Yet, when we were there in Jan, the ablutions for the non electric were clean, plenty hot water and the sites were clean and tidy.

Thanks all for the updates, we'll probably go at the end of this month. Yes rangerrobbie, it's great to camp out in the park, I used to be an Honorary Ranger in the park in it's early days. We used to go out in a team and map the old fences and vehicle wrecks for the park staff to remove, and camped out around an old tree, with one person on shift watch - before the lions!

Just be aware that some of the dirt roads/links are closed off, probably due to wash aways. Generally the roads are pretty shocking, although we did see a couple of graders standing around. Not really the place for platkars at the moment.

Have a good time, I am sure you will. Pilansberg is still a great game viewing area.
