    Default Need some help

    Hi
I am going to stay at Twee Rivieren for six nights in Sept.
I was going to stay at Xaus Lodge for two nights buy
dune 91 or can I spend that 1600 rand in some other way
to see the area? Maybe hire a driver to drive us over
there just to see the place. I don't want to spend that kind
of money just for a fancy meal and bed. Unless someone
here tells me different. I am renting a NissanxTrail 2x4.
My wife wants to see Bushman and I like taking pictures
    of birds.

    Thanks for the help

    Hi,
first go for one night to Kalahari trails http://www.kalaharitrails.co.za/index.php?p=1&lang=eng
and ask Prof Raza to get you in contact with the bushmen.

Than go to Kgalagadi, he best place to see birds is probably from Nossob to Unions End.

    There take Wilderness Camps.

    Theres not much left:

    Gharagap:
    http://www.sanparks.org/parks/kgalag...th=9&year=2012

    Kalahari tented Camp:
    http://www.sanparks.org/parks/kgalag...th=9&year=2012

    Kilie Krankie:
    http://www.sanparks.org/parks/kgalag...th=9&year=2012

    Mata Mata:
    http://www.sanparks.org/parks/kgalag...th=9&year=2012

    So you should book asap.

Or are we talking about Sept. 2013?

    Hi Larry.

Why are you spending 6 nights at Tweerivieren? Are the other camps like Mata Mata and Nossob fully booked?

    Hi Larry

I agree, with Fanatic and Southerndreams, try booking at any of the other two main camps, Mata Mata or Nossob, and even a night at either Kieliekrankie, Urikaruus or Tent Kamp. They are easy accessable with your xtrail Nissan 2x4.

You will see Bushman next to the road, across the road from Molopo Lodge, on the way to the Kgalagadi. ( I know they are not real, but close enough for a Yanky)

    Thanks for the information
Can someone drive from Twee Rivieren to Unions End with
rental car and make it back before the gate closes at Twee Rivieren.
or do I need something like a NissanxTrail 2x4?

    Hi Lawrence.

This is impossible no matter what vehicle you drive.

Travel time from Tweerivieren to Nossob alone is approximately 6-7 hours.

You would never make it in a day.

Lawrence 96% of the roads in Kgalagadi can be driven by car. Access is restricted to 4x4's only for roads to Gharagab and Bitterpan - check the SANPARKs website (refer post 3) to check for access to other wild camps.

I would not spend more than 2 nights at Twee Rivieren.

BUT, Twee Rivieren is the last spot with a restaurant, past this point you must make your own food. Gas stoves and gas fridges are the norm in the wild camps, with electricity in only Nossob, Mata-Mata and Twee Rivieren.

NOTE: When you arive at Twee Rivieren buy a guide book at RECEPTION. This is stunning book, for a steal. The shop sells "commercial" books, which does not give you such a compact wealth of information.

Larry, you can drive to Unions End with a car.

Heres th map from that mentioned broschure

There are some travel times on. Take them times 2.

There are sometimes high walls in the road from the grader
and a vehicle with high clearance would help.

You will see into their eyes on this height:

Nossob is notoriously overbooked by German Tour Operators,
he won't have a chance for that camp in that time.

There are fridges in all camp accomodations too (except Campsites).

    Hey Southerndreams
That map was great. The reason I booked six nights at Twee Rivieren
is because my wife has a medical problem and she can't get overheated
so I am trying to stay some where close to good facilities, but I would really like to get up towards Unions End if we could. If we broke down
in the middle of the day is there anyway to get in touch with anyone
for help? I know this is not the best place to take someone with a heat
problem but we drove across the Karoo and loved every minute and
I know the Kgalagadi will be the same. Thanks again this fourm is
great. We will be in Capetown Sept 29 2012 for 10 days.

    Hi Larry.

What type of heat problem? Serious? What if you take a Coleman Extreme cooler box filled with ice for emergencies?

Cell reception is a problem any place north of Tweerivieren...as in no reception at all. Hire a sat phone.

I'm not certain if the places north have 24 hour aircon. Someone else will have to comment on this aspect.

Look there is still LOTS to do in the Tweerivieren area. You can drive for quite some distance and see a heck of a lot of game so don't let that be a deterrant. Just don't try to drive to Unions End.

I think night drives with the rangers might be an answer here. You'll see a lot of nocturnal game and it will be cool.

I would also propose you hire a satphone and take it with you.
The park is very remote and cellphone reception is only at Twee Rievieren
and at one place at Rooiputs.

Are you going first to Cape Town and than to Kgalagadi?
I can look for a phone to rent here than.

It won't be THAT hot in September and you can test the first day with a dune drive, from TR via Samoevleing, KijKij to Auchterlonie and back,
    there are always people.
Than next day go up towards Nossob as far as you want and back.
Than go up to Mata Mata and back.
Mostly you won't come far, as there are so many predators,
we often only park at a waterhole in the shade and wait,
    what happens.

The area from Nossob to Unions End is the quietest areas,
theres no exit gate and not much people drive there.
You will see also birds on many other places,
    like there are owls:

    or

    Snake Eagle:

    and many
    Tawny Eagles:

If you tell what medical problem that exactly is,
we can also look what clinic or Doctor in Uppington
would be advisable in the emergency case.

Nossob and Mata Mata do have generators and NO aircon from 11 to 5.

My wife has Multiple Sclerosis and overheating is the one thing that
is not good for her. Is that ice chest one that can be pluged into the
car. Since I saw the map that you guys told me to look at I see there
is plenty I can see from being at Twee Rivieren so I will consider myself
one lucky yank to even get to see the Kgalagadi and will enjoy my
six nights at Twee Rivieren. Maybe if we ever move to Capetown
I wiil fit out an old Defender and make it safe so we could drive all
    over the Kgalagadi

Lawrence just make sure you don't drive too far and find yourself in a position where you have to travel in the dark as it's forbidden.

Driving to Mata Mata and back is a full day out. I don't know if you can drive to Nossob and back in a day.

Don't worry. You will have plenty to see and do from Tweerivieren. Book a couple of night drives with Sanparks when you get there.

    Enjoy!
