I have no idea how accurate this is, but unitrans motoring says the wading depth of the 3.6 rubicon is 483mm...

Not sure of the airbox design on the 3.6, but on the old 4.0l straight six, the airbox had a trumpet type inlet that you could rotate.

If you turned the trumpet towards the fan, then during deep water crossings, the fan would flick up water straight into the inlet causing the motor to splutter and sometimes die?

There should be no problem with water crossing, as long as you do not do it too quickly.
BTW all Wrangler's come off the same assemply line - models destined for export and those for North America. (There is a production facility in Mexico that also produces the Pentastar engine)
If it's not fun, it's not worth doing...

There was trip at Slanghoek, Rawsonville this weekend which I attended with my mate and his cruiser.

At the beginning of the trail the Breede River has to be crossed. The crossing was leveled by a bulldozer, so no surprises there, and it wasn't deep at all. I don't think it even reached the cruiser's rocksliders.

3 vehicles behind us was a Rubicon with what seemed like a lift and it definately had bigger tyres on. Looked really nice.

After the water crossing it stood on the other side, steam coming from the engine bay and missing. After about 5 minutes it seemed to be normal again. I didn't talk to the driver and therefore don't have any other info on the model.

I took mine through a kilometer section of deep water at the weekend (seriously flooded dirt road in tankwa) it was over the 35" tyres in places, and half to 3/4 of a meter for the entire section.

4H with 4th gear selected, (auto box) no spluttering, no missing, no problems...

And I was towing a 2.5ton double axle trailer at the time...

I wouldn't be too impressed. Sounds like wet ignition system somewhere. That's why I love my 3.1 WJ boat engine. This thing is positively agricultural!

I've taken my 3.6 Rubicon 'wading' in the Vaal Dam... right up to the bottom of the doors...

And again through a very muddy stretch with 'slightly quicker' passes through axle-deep water... no problems at all.

Also had the same experience at Groenkloof this saturday. Water was about halfway into the front grille and I drove quite slow ; was worried about hitting a big boulder. Lots of steam and engine spluttered, died. Had to wait few minutes to get it going again.

I'm definitely going to check this out soon. Anyone found the problem yet ?

PS. I had an XTrail 2.5 CVT which I took through a dam at Sondela, water was at the bottom of the windows and it went through without a splutter or anything, that was kind of careless of me, but it worked out well!

If you drive too slow and dont form a wake you are heading for issues! a boulder will never cause as much damage as water in your engine!

Yes, I always did that route with a much lower water level where I could drive through slowly and there are some boulders you hit, so I was a bit absent minded and worried about them and drove through slow as always. Didn't realize the water level has risen that much. Lesson learned log updated.

Question Re: 2012 Wrangler 3.6 Can't cross deep water?

    Reviving an old thread.

    HI guys,

I also have a 2012 Rubi(auto). Done a fair few trails etc and never had any problems before.

Went to De-Wildt on Sunday afternoon. Normal crossings I did didn't seem to have a problem till the 2nd last one where as I tried to drive out the other side it was as if the throttle pedal wasn't connected.
Few seconds later and away it would drive.
There was no stalling just lack of ability to control the pedal and she idled normally.

Was in 4wd Low and in 1st gear by the way.

At the end I thought it would be fun to hoon a bit and splash the water out the sides.

In the water again no problems at all. However again on exit no throttle control but this time for around 5 -8seconds.
Almost like somehow the angle of starting to climb out vs being flat was a problem.

Anyone else had similar or found a solution.

BTW she is stock standard, just 265 tyres. No lift.

Back in 2015 in Mozambique my wife almost drowned my 2012 Wrangler 3.6 Rubicon. On our way to the camp at Areia Branca we had to cross the lagoon which had washed out holes in different spots and we crossed fine on our way to make camp during low tide.
On our way out, going for a drive, we crossed at the same spot but this time the hole got deeper without us being aware of the changes below the water surface.
As she was driving through the lagoon we suddenly went under with the water over bonnet hitting the windscreen.
It was for a brief 3 to 5 seconds and I was surprised that no water went into the intake-air box. Take note that the Jeep wasn't fitted with a snorkel. I was amazed at how that was even possible and no water entered the cabin either.
I just spend some quality time thereafter washing all the salt water out of everything that I could reach and every other day when crossing the salt water.

That tidal channel has caught many people out. Mostly people who have had too many at White Sands..........
Our Wrangler and our WJ did that crossing with no issues.
