Hey, a big thank you to all of you that contributed. Looks like I stirred up a hornet's nest! That's what I love about this forum - you guys are only too happy to comment a question broken! And have a few laughs doing it too. It's been entertaining - thanks a mil.

As much as I enjoy a diesel out in the sticks my heart says 4.0 litre petrol. Sorry to disappoint Biggles and Pieterk. :-)

    Kind regards,
    Lyle

I had a 2.5 TD XJ for a couple of years and apart from general maintenance had no real issues. I was really happy with the Jeep and loved the little shudder and shake on start up and switching off. It had more than enough vooma and was unstoppable offroad.

Having said that I do think that the 4.0l would be the safer option and as has been said it is apparently bullet proof which means a low risk option. And then it also doesn't hurt to have all the extra power.

We have 2 customers with 2.5TD XJ's, Both incidently white 2001 models. The one with 212000km and the other 283 000km.

Both of them had issues with the heads cracking wich in turn lead to heads replacement. Both have problems with manual gearbox (input shaft bearings) and both had injector problems and the one had problems with the turbo and the other with the diesel filter housing return valve.

We have alot of customers with 4.0l XJ's and TJ's. None of the above mentioned problems, excluding waterpump and radiator and cap issues.
Some with automatic gearbox problems but that is not related to the diesel VS petrol issue.

Buy a 4.0l and forget about the diesel. The diesel have it's advantages but the maintenance outweighs all the positive attributes.

Maintenance or repair? Repair results from lack of maintenance. Keeping a healthy cooling system means no overheat, overheat = head crack. Otherstuff would be pretty normal for those km.

This is an interesting read for the XJ diesel owner. This is from the only other big market for the 2.5Td XJ; Australia.

@ XJJ, The main injector you get from the agents for R5400. The other 3 you just service the tips for about R900 each.

The Heads is about R1775 each from .......

The turbo recon was R6000 iirc.

It's actually repairs if you put it that way. Both customers came to us due to overheating and stayed with us since then. But yes, otherwise normal maint for those KM.

Compair the bill with a 4.0l with same KM?

For interests sake I worked out that the diesel dude at 283000km has saved R140,000 in fuel bills. (at current prices) So with the current resale values he could have bought a petrol XJ with what he saved.

Me and Charl are both mackie, sparkie, and a/c. He runs the workshop and ask for parts, i source the parts and do the costing and consult with the vehicle owner. Then i test drive the vehicles so i can consult the customer on future maintenance. And when i'm bored i go and play with spanners and work on the mackies nerves.
All diagnostics and testing are done by me and Charl.

In 15years you pick up a few things.

I'll phone around tomorrow and let you know, try and source the vin # for me so i can identify the ratios. Does he have a casing that is not cracked? Maybe i can get a build over box for cheaper.

Two weeks?. Will there be time for dunes? I'll work for fuel, food and dunes.... Geez, have you cape guys never operated a spanner before?
To busy playing in the dunes, drinking ''cold drinks'' and taking video's of XJ's struggling to get up a small sand incline i suppose...
