I agree with Fluffy , as mentioned before the farmer told me there are more routes , he knows the area well , and knows the Green Latern owners , this could be a awesome trip !

Let us try and get this going ,
Right, there's the confusion then. The route you did was De Beers Pass, which AFAIK is not the old Van Reenens pass. That camp is the one I was referring to. Of we stay in that area (pretty big area) those are my old stomping grounds, and we can do plenty of nice sight seeing. I know one or two places where there are some hectic routes, though to be honest, I'm not sure a 4x4 would get up any of them. The rest is dirt road, and can be fair to bad depending on whether it rained recently. IMO, the views are worth it!

I'm in Durban all week, how about those that are keen meet on Thursday evening at Hooters for bottomless hot wings and compare notes?

Hi Peter , The Route is not De Beers Pass ,
You enter at the top of the railway service road which leads off Van Reenes pass , just pass the Police Office going downwards into KZN onto your left a non descript farm gate ,
You then travel down the railway service rd for approx 15 km ,
You then turn off the railwayservice rd onto private property which you need permission to enter,
Then proceed along and through two to three farms on a 2 track rd that soon becomes as the pictures on this post and on the Old Van reenens Pass post shows ,
You then reach the camp in the rock face ,
You can then leave the camp and join onto De Beers Pass , which you then may go up towards the top off Van Reenens Pass or down towards Ladysmith ,

I hope this cleras things up , DE Beers is a tarred section and then becomes a gravel rd towards Van Reenens Pass ,

    Cheers

I think I must come with my surname is not for nothing van Reenen !! my great grandfather use to own the hole mountain range back in the 1800. But enough history, I dont want to throw a spanner in the works !! going down the railway is fine sleeping at the Jansens farm cave ( I know him personally ) but then this rout can become very interesting !! back threw the Champher's farm to the well known billtong shop just underneath van Reenens pas . Over the N3 on the Sandrivier road for about 3km , then right on a trek rout !! up the mountain again comming out just on top of Winterton !!!! on the tar road for about 5km back up the mountain on the old Voortrekkers rout as they went down the Drakensberg in 1937 and joining the tar road just ontop of Oliviershoek pass. This is the ultimate rout !! well what do you think !! or maybe a next time .

    Default 25 - 27 May 2012 Weekend

I spoke to the farmer ,

    1. The dates are noted on his calender ,25 - 27 May 2012
    2. There is sleeping for people in very rustic accomodation , no power ,with the following , 2 Rooms with 2 double beds each , and 2 Rooms with 1 Double bed and 2 single beds each , bring own bedding ,
    3. The cost involved is R100 per vehicle , and R150 per person per night sleeping at the rustic accomodation ,
    4. There is space for 10 vehicles for the trip ,

So let us complete the list and indicate who will be sleeping at the rustic accomodation , those that do not wish to sleep at the rustic accomodation can meet us on the existing Van Reenens Pass at a pre determined time and then we can proceed ,

    Cheers
    Phil

Sounds good, put my name down please for rustic accommodation. We will be two adults and two kids. Will confirm with the bos, but I don't think there will be any problem.

Can I camp outside the 'rustic' accomodation?
Where will our meeting point be the Friday? In other words, how long will it take me to get there - from Pretoria.
