I think a long weekend will be an over kill.

Must just hear if there are any plans for that weekend for the woesrand, if not then I would like to do "Jobedi take II" Tierkloof and Kudu must be concurred. Only Dirk (forum father) in a Rubi made it through Tierkloof the last time and no one else.

I wonder if we're all talking about the same route. The one I'm thinking off, and the one marked in the pictures, is a railway service road. Calling that grade 3/4 is a bit of overkill IMO...

Hi Peter , if you look at the Old Van Reenens Pass post and pictures you will see that the route is indeed part of the one depicted on the map shown by ralton, but it does not turn back towards the Tugela Toll , before that it turns off to the left on to the farmers property and then it becomes grade 3 to 4 depending on what the weather did to the terrain , it has rocky terrain , dongas washed out by water , inclines with steep gradients where there is hardly road but just grass veld ,

The track backtracks into the moutain so to speak to the right of where it starts off the N3 ,

    Default Route

Hi , the route shown by yourself is n normal gravel road that starts from the top going trough a tunnel and then proceeds down towards the Tugela Toll Area ,

I'm not sure I understand. The road highlighted on the map is part of the railway service road, and goes from Besters to the Green Lantern, it is not the old Van Reenens Pass, which you access near Swinburne, I believe.

A nice drive in the area is up Collins Pass, which takes you from Driefontein to the top of the escarpment, and, I think, joins the Meumel road.

I haven't done all of it, and a lot of places I did are not accessible as they now form part of the Ingula Pumped Storage scheme. If anyone is coming up this way, I'm keen to tag along, and I have a fair idea of the Kay of the land?

To the best of my knowledge there are at least 5 interresting mountain passes/trails in the Van Reenen/Ladysmith/Newcastle/Volksrust area.

I think we need some research done here.

    Could be an epic adventure.

    I'll get some info.

There's a place to stay off De beers pass, which has been tarred for the Power Station, can't remember the name, but you stay in caves that have been sort of closed up. I've got their number somewhere to see if it's still open, as the last time I was there it looked a bit run down.

There's also a place called the hidden valley, which you access via the dirt road passed Green lantern, that has place to camp and a chalet as well, I think.

I'll speak to some mates, but to the best of my knowledge, a lot of these places are just dirt roads, may e bad in sections, but not a 4x4 trail.

Other options include the road up to Harrismith via Geluksburg, and be Bezuidenhouts pass down from Harrismith area to Bergville , though these are a lite out of the way.

HI again , if you look at my pics on the Old van Reenens Pass Post you will see the camp with the wooden huts the braai area is under a ledge dug out by the farmer ,it is close to the pump station is this not perhaps the same place , when are you coming to Durbs next lets meet and compare notes ect ,

I agree with Fluffy , as mentioned before the farmer told me there are more routes , he knows the area well , and knows the Green Latern owners , this could be a awesome trip !

Let us try and get this going ,
