Default Fridges that shut down automatically

    Hi Chaps

My Wife and i are looking at a fridge for the back of the Jeep. We wont ever go camping for longer than three days or so so are not terribly worried about the battery being drained as we use the vehicle daily. I do see though that some of the better brands wont allow the fridge to drain the battery completely in any event. Can you perhaps guide me to a make that does this, its a bit of a minefield?

    Thanks chaps

Most of the modern fridges that run off 12 V will have this feature. Perhaps you can help narrow it down further

    What size? 35l, 40L 50L bigger ?

Do you want a single compartment as a fridge or a freezer or are you thinking double compartment ?
Lusted for a Landy but the Pajero was sexier and bigger in the right departments, just like my Missus.

Most Waeco (Dometic), National Luna, Snowmaster etc fridges will have a battery cut out setting. In fact, I think you will look long and hard before you will find a new fridge that does not have such a cut out function. If you planning to run it of your starter battery I suggest you set it on the highest volt cut out.

I think most do these days? I have an older generation Waeco CF50 (now Dometic) and it has that feature.

Just be mindful of voltage drop. I battled with this on the on the Commander years ago due to an issue with the wiring being too thin. I had the NL 50L weekender at that stage. Even at the highest setting, it would randomly shut down even with full batteries.

I cannot comment on the wiring from the starter battery to the auxiliary plug in the back of the Jeep but if not adequate, you could have issues with it shutting down before your battery starts running low due to the voltage drop...depending on the setting you select on the fridge. Do a proper test before going on a trip.

    Oh Brilliant news, thanks chaps!

My Jeep has a cigerette lighter already installed int he back and as mentioned even when camping the vehicle is in daily use. The wife wants freezer and fridge options and i want to make sure we purchase a decent brand that will serve us well. Would rather pay a bit more for a decent brand....i love the look of the Weaco units!

What Jeep? The reason I ask is that in my JKU my snomaster 60Lt is 10mm to long to fit into the back of my car lengthways and open the lid. Due to this I use my son's domatic cf50.
Also a note is will you fit the fridge on a slide for ease of use

I see my Jeep has a AGM battery, that should be some good news-They are commonly built to size and are found in high-end vehicles to run power-hungry accessories such as heated seats, steering wheels, mirrors and windshields

Its a Grand Cherokee CRD bud.

Does the cig socket still function of the vehicle is "off" or not on "acc"? I know some prados work like that, no power on the back cig socket if the vehicle is not running or on "ACC"?

Please be careful, this has been discussed many times and you run the risk of a flat battery or a disappointed wife. They can be power hungry and your scenario will take some management. It won't be as simple as plug and play. Lot's of choice though, so happy hunting.

Also meant to ask, is the bulk of places you go to able to supply 220V for you to plug into. ?

The fridge will cut out when the vehicle is not running if you use the cig lighter point at the rear. The wires are very thin at this fitting

If it will only be running off the Jeep's battery while driving to and from the campsite, then you should not have any issues...

This is your saving grace and I say drag the wife with shopping, you may end up with a better fridge than even you bargained for.

My advice look for those that have good insulation thicknesses. NL 60 mm, Waeco CFX range, top end Snowmaster. Just a bit of redundancy if the fridge does cut out while driving or you are parked away from a source at a view point or similar. Then the chance of loss of cool will be a lot less.

Thanks guys and last silly question. Do these top brands have an option to simply plug into the mains when we arrive at camp?

Yes, you just need to check the fridge spec says 12V/220V

Not a silly question at all, we all had to learn, some of us the hard way. Members here have paid more school fees than the ANC.

What all the guys are saying is you will only be powering the fridge from the vehicle whilst driving or standing off camp. Once in camp just plug it in.

    Yip

    They are marketed as 220v/24V/12V

Some are 220V/12V and not 24V

The snomaster 60 is a good size and they also have a 56Lt twin but I do not like the internal sizing of this. The snomaster and the cfx units come with a remote. This is not just a gimmick. If your fridge switches off when driving it will give a lost signal alarm. Both snomaster and NL now have 7 year compressor warranty

Black Friday sales (November 29) will be around soon. Should be some fridge bargains around that time.
