    Default Snomaster Portable Battery Box

Has anyone used one of these?

    https://snomaster.co.za/shop/camping...e-battery-box/

I am looking for a portable solution for a solar panel and a camping fridge. My thinking is rewiring the power supply at the back of my Prado with thicker cabling, plugging this into the power supply and charging the battery while I drive using this battery box. When I arrive at my destination, unplug the battery from the car and attach a solar panel to the battery box and keep it charging using solar power.

The pricing looks really good - even better from Makro online at R1699. Do I need to add anything else to make it work (other than a battery?)

Thanks in advance for your help.

I have one- very nicely made and individually fused.

It has 2 BH plus on the back which are used for charging and powering stuff. There is no automatic isolator, but the switch on the front disconnects the BH and terminals in the front. Therefore effectively isolating the battery. (my fridge plugs into the cigarette lighter which runs even with switch off)

If I was you i'd rather run individual 10mil cabling to it from the battery - its easier than you think.

Maybe also consider adding a WRND unit for the solar and isolator duty - thats my plan long term.

I bought one at a Getaway show 5 years ago. It was on a special for R700.00. Very happy with it.

You will need to add a solar charge regulator as this box does not support solar input.

I am not aware of a Snomaster shop in Brackenfell? However, same box at Makro is R1,699, see link:

Alright, you are referring to Danie, but AFAIK, he is working for Fastener Warehouse and doing fridge repairs etc, in his spare time, not necessarily only Snomaster. I doubt it that he will be selling those boxes, maybe he will order from Snomaster.

are you referring to tygerberg caravans? If you are I don't understand how they can still be in business. Never have stock, then go to CaraCamp in Somerset West and then you find the most helpful and knowledgeable people.

No, I was at the one in Robert Sobukwe - formerly Modderdam - Rd, just off Voortrekker Rd in Bellville, but the staff at both these branches can be somewhat quirky at times. I've almost started wondering if it's a requirement for the job! I've never been to CaraCamp, unfortunately.

I bought a battery box from Midas, Voortrekker Road Parow for les than R1 000. Wired up my own WRND Dc battery charger, put in a 110Amp/hr battery and run my 40l Snowmaster fridge with no hassles. And can Solar charge through WRND. All in my Jimny. Works a bomb.

Bought a snomaster box yesterday for R1300 at Outdoor Centre, to be used in the vehicle when doing a trip without the caravan or camper. It has all the type of outlets plugs one might need, including 2 USB plugs, one BH inlet trough the manual isolator, and a set of terminals outside also thr' the isolator. And off off course the battery SOC leds.

One would probably pay more if you bought all the parts separately and build it yourself.

Then installed a 30 amp Victron PWM solar controller in the box (it is small enough to also fit inside the lid amongst all the wiring etc) , and then outside a red BH plug for the solar panels to the controller, and another grey BH plug for the fridge directly from the controller to the load connectors.

    Total cost less than R2000.00.

Hi JLK. I was thinking of doing the same with mine. Do you mind sharing some pics of your additions?

It comes with 2 grey BH plugs. One an inlet from the alternator before the isolater and the other for the fridge from the battery. These multiple grey plugs is a bit confusion, each time you have figure which is which one The third BH plug I added as an outlet from the load point on the solar charger for the fridge.

30 amp PWM solar controller is in the lid with the red BH plug to connect to solars.

First time I noticed that the BH plugs are wired differently.

Presumably, you would want to have the alternator going into the one that goes through the switch, so that you can isolate it right?

Fridge you would want always on, so the non isolated one.

What would you do if I wanted to add a WRND controller?
