Taking my 18m/old on his first camping trip this weekend. Thought I'd keep it easy so we're going to Bufflespoort. at least there's grass and not too many thorn bushes. See how he (& SWMABO) handle it. then I may become more adventurous with him.

On our way to Kokoriba this weekend. Want to see what has changed since we last camped there about 3 years ago. I heard alot about some of the reserve being sold off, game that was erradicated, airfields, quads etc. If it's all true, I want to see it for myself, and then probably won't be going there again either. Used to love the place as it was a quiet, peaceful little getaway.

We went to Kokoriba in Feb,

3 pools, cool, warm and DAMN HOT!!! (Under lapa)

Lack of ANY grass, nice joint, quad game drives are awesome!!

Ok, so here is some feedback with relation to the changes at Kokoriba. I think many campers share my initial worries with relation to the changes that were made. The reason for this statement is that it was an extremely empty camp (less than 40% occupied) on a weekend on which school holidays started. Even on normal holidays, we usually had difficulty in getting a booking here, as the place was always packed. BUT...

I have to commend the new owners and staff at Kokoriba for not only the changes to the reserve, but also the change in attitude and service experienced this weekend. The noticeable changes are as follows;

- About half of the reserve was sold off. This means no dam, and half the space to move in (which should still be in excess of 200 hectares). The disadvantage is obvious, but there is an advantage also. They have kept the game numbers the same, meaning it is now much easier to spot at a more frequent rate. We were walking for about two hours and saw more game than we usually did on an entire weekend.
- Two additional swimming pools, one heated and under a lapa, the other cold. These additions have also come with added lawn areas that are now capable of handling a fully booked reserve. In the past, we didn't spend much time at the pools due to congestion. This problem has been solved and space is ample.
- Original bar, lapa and restaurant have been merged to form a big bar / restaurant. This creates more space for those lekker rugby Saturdays. They have also ammended pricing of liquor and food to a more likable state that also fits my budget much better. Examples of some of what I ordered this weekend and prices : Hunters [email protected] , plate of [email protected] , Cheeseburger and [email protected] , Savoury Mince on Toast [email protected] etc. So I can now spend more time resting and eating out, and less time preparing meals and washing dishes

- The addition of quad rentals. They offer Linhai Rustler quads for rent. The cost if R 150 per hour with no deposit. The quads have high and low range, as well as a reverse gear. They are not fast, which is ideal, because the idea is game viewing and not quad rally. Another advantage is that you may ride freely. I hate guided tours on quads as the guide and myself are usually not in sync with relation to speed, how long I want to stop and take photographs etc.
- Airfield built for micro lights and small aircraft. This is right next to the camping area, but seperated by a section of bush, thus not visible. I thought this might be a pain during the weekend, but I have to admit, to my amazement, that this is not the case. There were two micro light take-offs on Saturday morning and that was it. No heavy traffic or noise.

There are also several other minor upgrades and improvements, although I am not going to mention them all here. My summarized opinion, I will definitely go again and the changes, according to me, are mainly improvements.

So, all like-minded concernists who used to love going there, our fears on the changes are unfounded. It still has the original Kokoriba essence, with an added touch of ever so slight commercialism, hardly noticeable, and mostly beneficial.

Terug van ons langnaweek in Satara. Heerlik.... kon nog 'n paar nagte bly. Eienaardige weer, vreeslike reenstorm Vry nag, en toe wind Sat en Son. Baie diere gesien. Ek verstaan egter nie SANPARKS/KNP nie, ek en my vrou gaan Kruger toe solank as ons kan onthou, en die een ding wat elke jaar slegter raak is die geriewe, met so min moeite en geld kan die ablusiegeriewe, ontvangsgeriewe en die restaurante itv kwaliteit en diens soveel beter wees. Daar is so 'n algemene gebrek aan lus om iets te doen, maak jou hartseer.

het julle darm die wille honde gekry!? Jammer om te hoor laat julle so gesukel het met die kamp, ons het 100% teenoorgestelde diens daar gehaad!
