    Default DeWildt

Did most of this a few days ago. They say it is rated 1-5. Does anyone know what obsticles are a 4 or a 5, how is this determined and who does so?

    Just interested...

Their toughest obstacles are Gert se klip, and another rocky piece that most people miss. Immediately after entering the gate, turn right and follow the fence. At the stream, you turn left and there is a toughish obstacle there where you have to be carefull.

I don't know who gives the ratings, but I would not have given it a 5 for sure.

I did Gert se klip in the jeep with HT Sport tires with my eyes closed & napping behind the wheel..

That other Section, I did not even try as clearance is an issue with the Jeep..

I would rate Dewild a 2 to 3 with that other section a 4.. but this could raise by 1 if its raining

I think one should always rate your 4x4,as well as conditions when 'rating a trail'
What a guy might find easy in a modern electronically aided 4x4,or locked axles, will be a lot more difficult in a old school truck.

I often hear guys smugly remarking how easy it was-not talking about De Wildt specifically,I tell them to do it again in a Series 1 Land Rover,or similar,if they can do that, they have my respect.
Baboons Pass is a good eg-have the right truck, good conditions, road already built from recent travellers,do it in 6 hours.
Do it in the snow in a standard older 4x4........

De Wildt dry is probably a 3, but if it was pouring with rain, you will not get through some of the mud holes at the top of rocky river route in any vehicle, hence I think the 1 - 5 rating
even the rocky river route I would rate a 3 when dry
Rmember though that weather conditions changes a trail very quickly

I agree with Christo. Many trails that I have done indicated a rating of 3 to 5....3 for dry conditions and 5 when it's wet. I would imagine that even the uphill axle twister section got be tough when it is pouring rain....not to mention the rocky sections such as Gert se Klip. I once did a rocky section on another trail and with the wet rocks I had problems the first meter or two of the obstacle; normally this obstacle only becomes really tough 10 to 15 meters further.

We are looking at opening a piece that will probaby fall under the 5 most difficult sections in the country. Christo is right, its a 3 max.

I take it that this difficult section will be at De Wildt?

When are you expecting it to be open to the public?

The cross-axle bit on the left-hand koppie is tough without lockers or traction control.

Our Jeep WJ doesn't struggle, but the 110 with 235/85-16 Generals couldn't make it, and I wasn't going to risk 23 year old side-shafts.

Gert se Klip is the same: a modern 4x4 or an oldie with a locker won't be too challenged.

A nice course for a Sunday drive.

Just leave the big mud-hole alone......

We did the section where you turn right by the entrance in my standard Triton with original sidesteps, they never looked the same after that and had to be replaced. One of my favourite places for a day outing though.

is it perhaps the "brandpad" seen on some youtube videos? we ended up with 2 amaroks on a "track" with only plastic tape hanging from the trees to indicate the route. it was exciting, but we turned around after realizing this is probably best suited for modified-modified vehicles. The double modified is intentional irony.
