    Default Front bumper replacement

I have reached a point now where I have to replace my front bumper on my Disco. My head leans towards a Burnco, but I want to put the question out there:

    1. What is availbale
    2. What would the price diffrence be between a standar LR front bumper replacement (including both the fog lights) vs a after market bumper.
    3. Pro's/Cons??

    Thanks in advance

I recently replaced my bumper with a Burnco bumper, the normal D2 bumper costs MUCH more than a Burnco bumper. Quite happy with the Burnco.

A year ago I broke my front bumper in the dunes and claimed from insurance.

Took it to a panel shop (ok, ok, I took it to Burnco) who quoted R16k for bumper, stiffener, painting (it's an ES with colour coded bumpers)
Ended up costing R8.5k for the Burnco, also colour coded. Insurance paid.

    Pro's:
I won't break it again. Actually I did manage to crack it along one weld hitting something in a quarry, but Burnco took one look and said they will fix it for free.
Better ground clearance and approach angle
Better access to things like radiators, etc. Less stripping.
Very strong. Every single time I go to the dunes I need to readjust the spotlights afterward because they've been pushed back by sand.

    Cons:
Worse protection for the wing air intake. Spinning in sand allows the intake to draw sand in easily. Solved this by blanking the intake off and drawing in underbonnet air until I get around to snorkeling it.
Window washer bottle is exposed and visible. You can move it upwards a bit or paint it black. You can't relocate it elsewhere under the bonnet. There are articles about doing this on the web but they only apply to LHD models as they put it where our brake booster is.
    You lose the headlight washers.

I've added pics to the above post. Burnco mount spots in the bumper- well protected behind the steel and loosely enough mounted that they can pivot backwards if knocked, which I do all the time. You can see on the pics that the drivers side one has been knocked.
Wired to the original spotlight wiring so they operate from the original switch

My original spots were both broken so included in the 16k quote.
Note in the pics my washer bottle has been removed. I have a small universal one under the bonnet

Does the price include the spots as well? and I assume by the 'original' switch you mean the front fog light switch?

The fogs are standard. Hein also offers an upgraded fog light for a bit more.

Another consideration is that Burnco aren't airbag complaint. Some of the other major brands are.

I've had some issue getting mine to align properly, but I suspect my vehicle is out of whack. A buddy offered to help my enlarge the mounting holes so we should be able to sort it out.

Does someone know if they need to be painted? I assumed they were delivered powder coated, but whatever is on mine is very very soft and comes off easy.

Does that mean the airbags is completely useless??

And on the color... do they color code them (white)

To be honest I'm not sure. I'm guessing airbag complaint ones are designed to fail in a collision in such a way that they trigger the airbags. But I could be talking rot
    - EDIT - Theres some reading here http://www.landroversonly.com/forums...-bumper-33422/
about airbag compatibility. Interestingly enough theres also a comment on how something as simple as lifting your vehicle will also change the operation of your airbags.

I believe the stock bumper is mounted on crush cans but the Burnco is not. I'm sure it doesn't disable the airbags though.

As you can see mine is colour coded. They prefer to do them in black but will colour code on request. If however you are as badly behaved as I am you will need to get it repainted once a year or so. It is called a BUMPer after all.

Hagu was quicker to respond, I agree with him. I had the driving lights wired through the ECU with a instrument binnacle switch from an ES model. I considered colour coding, but in the end the black looks better on my car.

I had a quote from Safari Center for ARB fitted R17 000. It is Airbag compattable, If I understand correctly there is a crumple bracket that deforms on impact and activate the airbags. The crumple brackets gets replaced afterwards. Too expensive IMO

Brunco looking like much better value for money

ARB also precedes the vehicle by 15 minutes.
The approach angle is similar to a Murcielago

ARB on the Disco2 reminds me of this for some reason...hehe.

A bit off topic but how does the Airbag sensor work anyway? Does it need to be hit directly, or just sense an impact. Where are they located?
Can they go off when not driving or the battery is disconnected. I hear on on particular vehicle they only work when the vehicle is travelling over a certain speed for example.

-EDIT- Nevermind. Rave has a whole section on the SRS section. Apparently a thing called the DCU located near the handbrake is the brain behind sensing a rapid deceleration (crash).
