It seems to me that either "gert se klip"'s reputation will have to be downrated, or the the general opinion of the std Q7 uprated....

All jokes aside, I do think that was the most exteme obstacle that my Q7 will do without low range - not the incline - but the steps you have to climb on the incline. Especially as I have to take it extremely slowly to watch for ground clearance issues.

I do find the traction control very capable, and have never had an issue with traction, although my exposure is limited to Groenkloof nature reserve (only 1 real obstacle there - my mates with their Jeep Grand Cherokee and Cherokee 3.7 got stuck ;-) ), Hennops and now de Wiltd.

PS: How do I upload video files?

Leondb, wat model is your Q7 ? I'm very surprised of the capability (not really, as i do know they (Porsche & VW & Audi) have some of the most sophisticated 4x4 systems around) it is just that NO-ONE is ever daring enough to try them... well except you :-)

    Leondb,

I always valued low range highly when defining a proper 4x4. Going steeply upwards can be overcome by a "big" engine. How about going downwards? Low range assists greatly with braking. Does the Q7 have a similar system to LR, Descent Control?

I saw a Toareg a few year ago at Vleesbaai performing very well on sand.

The Q7 does not have decent control as such. I did notice that with ESP in offroad mode, and the box in tiptronic 1st gear, it seems to maintain speed downhill at about 15kph - not really decent control.

While I greatly appreciate something like decent control for hills and such, there is no way that an obstacle like "gert se klip or any of the axle twisters we did can be negotiated at that speed - IMO. So for me it was brakes only. I dont know how offroad mode in the Q7 affects the abs, but I noticed a couple of times that the wheel would lock and slide on the down hills.

Leon but with the S line bumpers the Q7 ground clearance still better than the ML's

ML will need to go in for repairs.

Q7: Well done! (I read on wikipedia that some Q7s have a centre difflock, how sure are you that yours dont lock?)

ML: Told you so... (See my earlier comments regarding the repair bill. The bumper is a special polyurethane and can not be plastic welded, new bumper is R10k or I suggest you get a bumper from Lynx)

Tuna :Really? (Meaning you should have whipped the Q7!)

I'll check on the difflock thing, but I dont think so. The touareg has a low range option and diff lock, and I guess maybe you could spec and overseas Q7 with that box.

I found some intersting Audi AG docs. Basically:

Automatic locking centre differential with asimmetric torque split 42%/58% front rear with EDL (Electronic Diff Lock) when slip is detected that allows 100% torque transfer to either front or rear axle. From there ESP uses brakes to stop a wheel spinning and enable left right torque transfer.

Reverse braking mode: treats the rear axle as front axle with braking pressures swapped for stable braking in reverse

Hill decent on 10-20% inclines up to 20kph

It made quite an interesting read. Not sure how to post a multi page PDF, but if someone is interested I'll mail it to you.

Apparently there's a lot more kit than I thought...

Here is a clip to show how the ML ground clearance is enough to approach Gert se klip straight on (with proper tyres fitted).

Here is another clip to show that those axle twisters at De Wildt or elsewhere does not have to end up with a damaged front bumper.

I am glad everyone had fun though
Would have loved to be there, but maybe next time.

And if that video did not convince you that there are effective alternatives to low range (transfercase type) , then look here to see how the Q7 climbs a 50degree incline - WITH OUT low range!
