Our village church, built of brick and flint in the late 1200's or early 1300's. The porch (South entrance) of handmade bricks, is, in my view, one of the finest in the region. The flints would have been dug out of the local fields by hand. The oak door is 700 years old, and still uses the original lock and key.

In the churchyard there is a "plague grave".......a communal grave for plague vicitims of the 17th century, marked by a stone skull headstone. There is also a world famous magician buried here, apparently.

The church served a parish of only 200 to 300 people when it was built, and every village around here has a church of a similar size, which I still find utterly amazing. I'm told the congregation is only 5 or 6 now, as religion continues its rapid decline.

In Europe, yes. In Africa it is one of the fastest growing growth industries, with the emphasis on industry. Pretty church that, it would make a great photographic studio!

It's a bit of a newcomer around here!

The oldest one is about 30 miles away and was built in 654AD.......ie it is 1357 years old. Many others were built around the time of the Norman invasion in the late 11th century.

andreklopper your pics are real stunners. I was christened in that church in Warden and grew up on the very cold and hard wooden benches. If it hadn't been for that church the whole town would have been in ruins by now - the rest has definitely gone down the tubes. Dominee Pienaar got a bit tongue-twisted when he called my parents forward at the christening - he ended up calling my dad "and his sister" instead of "brother and sister...." Nobody else probably noticed but my mom will recall this to this day as it would not have gone down well in that community in the early 70's. Also have one, from a different angle (sorry for the duplicate):
