    This is not about EGR or Water Seperation.

    Catch Can simply filters the oil from the blow by/crank case inside the engine. And keeps it out of air coming into the engine/turbo.

    I would not start with a diesel pump. Cold morning, crappy start would tend to be an glow plug. Diesel pump could be intermittent, but would happen randomly throughout the day.

    quick test also. Switch on ign, let light go on and off. Switch ign on again and let light go on and off and do it a third time and then start. If start is easy/normal glow plug are probably gone....
