Re: GENERAL Grabber 'X3' Mud Terrain

The tyres are the X3’s and are definitely Mud Terrains (sidewall: 3 polyester). They are nice looking tyres, my only concern is that sidewalls could possibly be a bit soft and vulnerable. I have no...

    Re: Icom 706 prices

There’s currently one on SARL swopshop for R6000 (advert date 1 Oct 2019).
Also one on HARC for R8000.
Look through PARC swop shop too, good site to watch.

They are really good radios, I have 2...

Re: Land Cruiser 200 Tire Size

285/70/R17's fit with well with no rubbing and only a slight drop in performance.

The noise from the muds is very noticeable though, brace yourself.

Re: Camp Syncro is open again

The Swiss couple left in Feb 2019. They gave Syncro to Anna. I don’t think you ever own the land, just the infrastructure really.

Below is based on June 2019 visit:

    Anna’s son, Janice...
  14. Re: Independent trailer suspension DIY question

This is very over-simplified. Stacked springs have completely different properties to a diamond shape. The stacked springs start interacting together in friction and the increased composite depth has...
  15. Re: Independent trailer suspension DIY question

I wrote this earlier today and agree with your philosophy about longer springs being problematic:

Softer springs/coils displace more, quite obvious.

When they recoil, although the acceleration...
  16. Re: Independent trailer suspension DIY question

In terms of toppling over, do you believe that coils having a travel of say 200mm is any different to leaf springs with travel of say 50mm?

Re: Trailer design - where are the clever guys

Agreed but something is not correct. There should not be that much horizontal play. The bolts are supposed to work in shear alone, not bending and shear as is the case here.

    Add: looks like post...

Re: Trailer design - where are the clever guys

I could be misinterpreting your design but it looks like you are missing some parts. Also the front set of leaf spring looks wrong, or at least the wrong way around.

    *ignore, I see the intent*

    Re: Metalian Basic Prototype trailer

Personally I would find a bottom tray very useful.

A top tray/shelf also always useful to carry firewood, gas bottles or whatever odds and ends.

    Re: Bush Lapa mods

The 265/65/17 is only a 3.6% increase in radius from the 245/75/15. Very little difference.

My gut feel is that between Madisa and Purros you are going to be very pushed for time. This is a long stretch to cover with only one stop. Seems like you need to gain a day somewhere....

    Re: leaf spring mounting reinforcement

Agreed. Or across compressive stress lines as is the case here. A sudden change in cross sectional area leads to high concentrations of stress and inevitably is where fatigue rears its ugly head.

    Re: leaf spring mounting reinforcement

What they are saying is that by welding across the bottom of the beam (along the flange) you are potentially weakening the beam because this is the area which is most stressed when the beam bends...

Re: Please help pick my solar panels..

Correct, they are. You are going to have to stick to the '12v' panels. They go up to around 155w.

Re: Please help pick my solar panels..

Ian,hi, 120W is a toy. Rather go Kobus' route. The panel weighs 20-22kg, hardly a premium.
Make the insulation work but don't compromise on W's.
