  1. Re: Kaokoland, Damaraland and their Riverbeds - Mini Trip Report

The fuel bladders are super strong. Before buying them I did a bit of research first and I read that they passed a 30m drop test and another test with a picture of a 4x4 vehicle parked on top of a...
  2. Re: Kaokoland, Damaraland and their Riverbeds - Mini Trip Report

I thought I might add a bit of a sequence of pictures of us coming down the last rough section of Van Zyl's Pass. The previous pictures were really only of the beginning, middle and end. The pictures...
  3. Re: Kaokoland, Damaraland and their Riverbeds - Mini Trip Report

Yes Leon, dit kan beslus solo gedoen word, maak net seker jou voertuig is reg vir die uitdaaging en vat dit net rustig.

I had zero vehicle damage from Van Zyl's Pass, but a few more "bumps and...
  4. Re: Kaokoland, Damaraland and their Riverbeds - Mini Trip Report

    Just for interest sake.

Once we completed the last challenging downward section and drove on a bit. We were looking ahead and saw this very steep climb that lay ahead. At first take it looks...
  5. Re: Kaokoland, Damaraland and their Riverbeds - Mini Trip Report

The first bit of Van Zyl's Pass is a pretty straight forward 4x4 track. With a few climbs and descents.

We packed a few rocks to make this step climb a little easier.

  6. Re: Kaokoland, Damaraland and their Riverbeds - Mini Trip Report

We left Ruacana after visiting the Epupa Falls in the morning and Headed for Van Zyl's Pass via Okangwati.

The road to Okangwati was fairly straight forward, a bit of sand and a few rocky...

Thanks for all the positive and contributing comments so far Gents, much appreciated.
We now head off into Kaokoland. I will post a map of our basic route, then with pics explain each section...
  8. Re: Kaokoland, Damaraland and their Riverbeds - Mini Trip Report

The Sunday after the wedding, we were headed for Ruacana and decided that we would spent one night at Okaukuejo, drive through the park and then head out of the Galton Gate the next morning to...
  9. Re: Kaokoland, Damaraland and their Riverbeds - Mini Trip Report

    Hey Johan.

Indeed it was a really great trip. Next time you are coming along. ;D

Remember the time many years ago, when You, Dannie, Kattie and I went to drive in the Ugab River swamps.
    Man...
  10. Re: Kaokoland, Damaraland and their Riverbeds - Mini Trip Report

Heading on down the Upper Huab river, I knew there were swamps ahead and by all indications on the maps, they were long stretches of swamps.
I always get a bit apprehensive when heading towards...
  11. Re: Kaokoland, Damaraland and their Riverbeds - Mini Trip Report

We entered the Upper Huab River in the late afternoon, it is immediately noticeable how much bigger the river was. There are very few rocks and the track is wide and sandy.

    That evening...
  12. Re: Kaokoland, Damaraland and their Riverbeds - Mini Trip Report

The next morning we left the Aba-Huab Campsite and headed for the Sout River 4x4 trail. The Sout River flows into the Upper Huab River. We planned to drive down the Sout River, then into and down the...

    Thanks AboutAfrica

I was going on what T4A called Slangpos. I see though that T4A still shows the farmhouse and windmill area as Slangpos, within a few meters of each other ?

  14. Re: Kaokoland, Damaraland and their Riverbeds - Mini Trip Report

After a good nights rest, the next morning we headed off to Slangpos, there we found an old abandoned small farm house, windmill, reservoir and an amazing trough carved from a tree stump. The...
  15. Re: Kaokoland, Damaraland and their Riverbeds - Mini Trip Report

I think AboutAfrica and mikeml answers are smack on. As long as you stick to the trailer friendly routes it will be fine.
I personally prefer travelling the more challenging routes without a...

    Sorry we missed you!
Yes, we saw the bushman paintings in the cave. My wife studied a bit of Archaeology as one of her subjects and was really loving it. It was the second time we have camped at...
  18. Re: Kaokoland, Damaraland and their Riverbeds - Mini Trip Report

My fuel capacity was a total of 200l Diesel.
    Main and Aux tank: 140l
Jerry Can on roof rack: 20l
    4 x 10l Fuel Bladders: 40l

I managed to get fuel at Okangwati, after Ruacana, so had a full 200l...
  19. Re: Kaokoland, Damaraland and their Riverbeds - Mini Trip Report

Yes, I have tracks for everything, but first need to tidy it up and sort out the all the data captured to make it reasonably presentable.
Should get to it fairly soon.:)
  20. Re: Kaokoland, Damaraland and their Riverbeds - Mini Trip Report

After leaving a deserted Rhino Camp we headed North on what T4A calls the "Desolation Valley 4wd-trail".
We have driven this track out of the Ugab before, it starts with a small rocky tributary that...
  21. Re: Kaokoland, Damaraland and their Riverbeds - Mini Trip Report

Admittedly, my cell phone was in my pocket and I used that to snap the pic of the snake. I was pretty shaky then and for some reason managed to mistakedly flip the camera mode to forward camera and...
  22. Re: Kaokoland, Damaraland and their Riverbeds - Mini Trip Report

We arrived in Swakop on the 30 April 2021 and spent about a week prepping for the trip and rigging the vehicle. It takes a lot of work and the "to do" list never seems to get shorter. :)

  23. Kaokoland, Damaraland and their Riverbeds - Mini Trip Report

In May 2021 we did a three week trip through Damaraland and Kaokoland.
Our core focus was on Riverbeds and exploring as much of the area as possible.
On this trip, we did the Lower Ugab, Lower...

    Re: Current road condtion

Hi Tannaman. The drive is really nice and very scenic.
Not so sure that there are to many good stayovers along the route, but we stayed at Cornie's Camp and Omarunga, both were really great.

    Re: Current road condtion

Agree, road is good. A 4x4 should have no problem crossing the rocky river section.
We travelled the road on 19 May 2021, from Ruacanna to Epupa Falls.
  26. Re: Using solar panels in winter sunshine - winter camping

Very open ended question, just so many variables to consider. Fridge or freezer, Western Cape vs Free State vs Namibia winter sunshine conditions.
If you just camp a night or two at one spot and...
  27. Re: BFG KO2 - What could have caused this damage?

In the past I have lost two tyres due to shredding.
I generally found that when traveling on rough noisey or rutted gravel roads, I noticed the flats to late and the tyres ended up looking much like...
  28. Re: BFG KO2 - What could have caused this damage?

Looks like you had a puncture and flat tyre and drove on to far before noticing.
A TPMS would have likely notified you of the flat tyre early on and prevented this.

We did Van Zyl's Pass on 21 May 2021, it was quite rough, but certainly doable.
We spent quite a bit of time building and repacking the difficult parts as we went.
    The steap rocky decent towards...

    Scorpion ID

This scorpion visited our campsite in Kaokoland.
Meaures about 80mm from pincers to curled up tail, as in the pic.
Looks like it could be quite venemous, going by small pincers, big tail.

    ID ?...
