  1. Re: Optimal solar panel for vehicle in long-term storage?

Apologies if this is a dumb question: Why not remove the batts and keep them at home?
    1) Removes the worries
2 No complexities of having a solar panel mounted.
    3) Car cannot easily be...
  2. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

Edited my post, for clarification: Install and sign-off must have taken place before the inverters NRS registration expired.
  3. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

Nope. All previous inverters installed that was on the previous NRS lists, remains legal until such time as they need to be replaced.

EDIT: Install and sign-off must have taken place before the...
  4. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

;D Maybe the other manufacturers can do the same as Victron, and bring their own products out. :p

If you don't need batteries on the grid tie system, look at Solis.
If most of your loads can be...
  5. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

Indeed. I used the same feature.

Just a thought I want to put out there:
Because energy meter are not cheap, and won't be used after one has gone grid tied, if someone knows they want to go say...
  6. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

Sonof's are wireless relays, to switch devices on/off cleverly. Not energy meters, as far as I'm aware. I could also be mistaken.
  7. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

I used a Efergy meter for a while to see what goes on. Not that accurate but over time, it becomes pretty indicative of what is going on.

    Here are a few:...

    Rubicon.
  9. Re: Grid-tied or off-grid. Please consider ...

5 individual strings come down to the combined box, each up to 4 panels in series per string.
Inside the combiner box they are wired for parallel as per the pic a few post previously.
  10. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

    Teach me!

We know we can set the grid set point.

Setting the "max feedback to a negative value" ... are you by any chance referring to the new update on the Venus, the one in the picture below?...
  11. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

My view has always been that until the law is changed, feedback is a waste of time and effort.
Have heard of some Munic's givien R0.10c per kw, if THEY pay for the bi-directional meter, do it, makes...
  12. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

Here is a different view, simpler, for most of us have these numbers at hand.

Forget my off-grid system, was a hobby, DIY "solar" hobbiest UPS that ran for many many years, switching, based on...
  13. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

    Exactly.

Because you have the batteries, use them (!) at night when the house loads (not only Always On DB) have decreased, by i.e. powering the fridges, outside lights, wifi and all that,...
  14. Re: Grid-tied or off-grid. Please consider ...

Apologies, you are right, you did not say 20%! My bad.

Connection fee ... like CoCT brought in the R150 + VAT connection fee, yeah, I can buy that.

Wonder if they did it legally, is there a...
  15. Re: Grid-tied or off-grid. Please consider ...

    4kwh per day at wot R2.00 = R8.00 x 365 = +-R 3 000 pa right?
    What does a new A+ A++ fridge/freezer cost?
And, how long will it last, compared to the fridge/freezer Granny gave us that is still...
  16. Re: Grid-tied or off-grid. Please consider ...

Here is what I ended up with.
Combiner box is planned for 4 Series / 5 Parallel on 350w panels, yet I started with 2S / 5P.
So with no changes to the Combiner Box, or the strings, I just tie in 2S...
  17. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

Models on the list is based on the sales potential in a country, for apparently it is very costly to get the NRS certification done by the Test Houses.

As I said, that list WAS 8+ pages long...
  18. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

Here the NRS list of approved inverters, compliments of CoCT: Approved inverter and equipment ito NRS 097-2-1 (2020 04 22)
Used to be 8+ pages long ...

    Ekkekan, we've discussed that...
  19. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

Ps. I found the old Bluesolar Grid inverter, long gone.

Victron systems allows for time shifting power, charging from solar, providing grid support, and exporting power back to the grid.
    When...
  20. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

If one uses the inverter as say a UPS, and you switch on the grid-tie segment, it will do the relay and the bonding tests, but it will not feed back.
So they come out with grid-tie potential.

    If...
  21. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

Fronius is a grid tie inverter, no batteries needed.
So you can use a Fronius instead of a MPPT if you want.
ABB grid tied inverters can also integrate with Victron systems, instead of a MPPT....
  22. Re: Small Low-Cost Off-Grid Solar System

Mmm, wonder where they go that Excel. Probably from a Guest user. ;D :p

Leave those defaults, as you are getting new batts.
  23. Re: Small Low-Cost Off-Grid Solar System

No brainer then ... it is 12v.

And IF ever you feel you are in a "corner", to sell a 12v system on Gumtree is easy!
    Even faster on 4x4 forum's classifieds. :)
Only IF you upgrade to say 48v...
  24. Re: Small Low-Cost Off-Grid Solar System

System is not complicated no, just not going to fit easily in a +-R16k budget.
Ok, it can fit BUT you could be looking at spending more money sooner than you would hope for.

    12v is fine, so what...
  25. Re: Small Low-Cost Off-Grid Solar System

GEEEZZZZ ... I must read slower!!!

Your Mom, no Eskom and no Eskom future.

You need more in-depth analysis of the system ...
  26. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

    Only a pleasure John!
Very happy that the grid-tied penny has droped for you too.
Did you come right ito getting the ok to go from 3-phase to single phase?

On this note ... Way I look at...

    Re: Lithium battery usage

Just to make sure, you set the battery volts to get the SOC you want, like i.e. setting the volts to get the 90%?

Push the limits too, see where it does not want to go, rather than having to...

    Re: Lithium battery usage

    Hi Rotunda,

Sounds good, keeping the batts at 90%. Yes it is good for the batts as lithiums don't want to be kept full charged all day.
Yes, it is good for 10 years BUT, the last thing we...
  29. Re: Grid-tied or off-grid. Please consider ...

AAAA ... Axpert charges batts only via solar. Gotcha!

So you switch the entire house main DB between either Axpert or Eskom as the only feed with the changeover switch?
    Did my the penny...
  30. Re: Grid-tied or off-grid. Please consider ...

    CoCT vs COC I presume?

A CoC of the install is highly recommend for insurance purposes.
  31. Re: Grid-tied or off-grid. Please consider ...

What was discussed adnausium on another forum, for a year(!) after I broke the news there a few years back of having to register your panels, is that the changeover switches where discussed in depth....
  32. Re: Grid-tied or off-grid. Please consider ...

    Yes, it is.

But that begs the question, why go "off-grid" in the first place if you have Eskom?
Why when you can drop your Eskom costs to <R600 (connection fee incl), and even lower than that...
  33. Re: Grid-tied or off-grid. Please consider ...

Netmetering can only be done with a Bi-directional meter, costing, in Cpt, about R 12 000+, with a contract signed between you and the Munic on the terms.
On top of that cost, there is a +-R15 per...
  34. Re: Grid-tied or off-grid. Please consider ...

Asking the question obviously assumes that you have absolutely ensured that your loads, and load profiles, are well managed, done with foresight, catered for by the 2 x 6kWh lithium banks, the 12 x...
  35. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

    YES!!! ;D

Actually mine is set at 25w, as my meter does not trip. ITron PAYG meter.
Having literally watched mine, I decided on 25w.

The higher you set the grid point, the higher the draw...
