    Re: Home distilling rum

Airing is highly beneficial for rum ( if one doesn't have the luxury of a cask and time) and so is some time in sunlight, especially when doing "forced" aging with wood chips.

Re: At least, there's now a decent campsite at the border of Hluluwe Imfolozi

Having not been to this site I have an idea where it might be seeing that it is 3km from the entrance gate. There is a structure on RHS near the main road that was built a few years ago as some...

    Re: Mkuze GR Update ?

You visit twice and become the expert on Mkhuze Game Reserve, people read your comment and decide to not go there which is sad for me. At the Killarney GTG you also couldn't wait to tell everyone how...

Forgot to add, they also do delicious pressed tongue and brawn cold meats - the pressed tongue is a favourite "padkos" snack for the missus when we are on a day trip in the area.

Re: So who is going camping this weekend?

Nyama is a general Zulu term for red meat. There are a few nyama things you need to try from Allens - skilpadjies, liver wors and also their sosatie and spek wors, lemon and herb lamb rib, marinaded...

    Re: Would you?

I'd buy it as it is a 3.2.

I will never again use the "bulletproof" term here on the forum as I learnt I know nothing after owning these cars for a long time, but I am comfortable to take the...

Re: So who is going camping this weekend?

If you don't pop in at Allen's Butchery in Hluhluwe and get nyama there I will be highly disappointed as you will be also :)

If you do, say hoezit to Corrie and Craig.

For some or other reason we didn't put the cars away on arriving home, which means it pops up on the going to bed "scope of works" checklist and means I have to tuck them into their garage beds at...

The rum GTG seems like a plan Ross. We live about 4 min away from the caravan park, so you could pop in and maybe do supper with us.

I'll send you my number via PM.

There is an issue of vessel seaworthy certification though but I have not seen or heard of anyone being checked or inspected with kayaks.

    Re: Richards Bay Harbour Fishing

Yes, fishing is allowed, just make sure you have a fishing licence. As Andrew stated, Pelican Island would probably be the best place, safety wise to launch from.

I have a Popes kayak you are...
  21. Re: Fermenting vessels, does shape have an influence?

Die ander ding wat ek nou aan dink Chris, die Voermol sghubus het "raised" bottom op plekke, dalk sit die goeie goed daar vas. Die emmers nou weer is plat onder.

Ek dink ek sal 'n "control batch"...
  22. Re: Fermenting vessels, does shape have an influence?

So say I and therefore the question.

Attached to show: on lhs the cloudy bottle has two drums ( sghubus) of stripping run combined in it and the two crystal clear ones are each from a bucket.
    ...
  23. Re: Fermenting vessels, does shape have an influence?

I used the vessels the molasses is supplied in, buckets are the 20L Molatek ones and the containers are the 20L ( I think) Voermol ones.

    The other sqhubus are 25L.

  26. Re: Fermenting vessels, does shape have an influence?

Jelo I did 4 washes, two in buckets and two in containers.

Result was 2l yield on the buckets, 1L yield on the containers which I am trying to understand why. Containers 5 day ferment and buckets...

    Re: Home distilling rum

The "muck" pit with the sugarcane looks uuhhmm, interesting. I added 2l to one of the washes, using the tap at the bottom of the conatiner to avoid the floaty bits. All the ratios I can find in my...

    Re: Home distilling rum

I have revised my washes- there were two different batches I used to do, one with yeast and sugar, the other just molasses and yeast reused from what was left over in the containers.

    The no yeast...

    Re: Home distilling rum

    Busy weekend it was.

Molasses is a cow to work with as it is sticky, using the hot backset/ stillage/ dunder from the still makes it easier and quicker to dissolve.
  30. Re: Fermenting vessels, does shape have an influence?

Will a sugar wash ferment the same then in a container as in a bucket? One would think it would but it doesn't seem so.
  31. Re: Fermenting vessels, does shape have an influence?

So you use sghubus ie containers with a carry handle?
  32. Re: Fermenting vessels, does shape have an influence?

How much difference will it make though Jakes? I am referring to 20/ 25l vessels.
  33. Fermenting vessels, does shape have an influence?

As the title suggest, is it supposed to matter?

I picked up on something the last two days of distilling and am wondering.
