    It's always hard to comment on that kind of thing if you have not done a scan on the system and checked for faults. A simple fault that might clear might be responsible for the strange behaviour.

    Yeah do not go down the rabbitnhole of head gaskets before you have bypassed or replaced the egr stuff. Don't let some mechanic tell you that is the only next option.
