    2 things.
    I often find that people use the wrong oil.
    The drive train has plenty areas of small "free play". Diff, transfer, gearbox, etc.
    Try a LR and you will be horrified.

    He mentions the German carb. Probably the VW carb from the Golf. That carb is brilliant. On the VW it is also on a pre-cross flow setup.

    If the motor was started and run with a multi-grade oil, there is a real possibility the rings are toast.

    Did you have the cam checked out?
    Did you check the cam bushes?
    With what did you use to run in that motor?

    To run in, I prefer a SAE40 mono grade....
