    Re: Camp sites Brandvlei/Krnhardt area

We have rented one of the Elma houses overnight before, clean, cheap, very good value for money.

    Re: Outlander

We love our Outlander. Ground clearance is crap if you want to do rough terrain, but that's about the only issue we have had. Excellent in soft sand, floats over the top. Traction on gravel in 4WD is...

Re: Mabuasehube Advice for 2022 Trip

I've been to Mabua several times, in July, September, December etc, and it is always good (although I haven't been there since it got popular - we were always almost the only vehicle in the reserve)....

I'm very glad that you are still alive, Jayefe! Your powers of auto-suggestion must be strong.

    Re: Malaria meds

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor.
We use Mozitec, which is the Malanil generic. First tablet a day or two before entering malarial area, daily tablet while there, and continue for seven days after...
  8. Re: Travelling in Botswana while being 3 month pregnant

Yup, it isn't well received. The vast majority of people who live in malarial areas do not do so out of choice, the same way people who live in war zones, or in extreme poverty in South Africa's...
  9. Re: Travelling in Botswana while being 3 month pregnant

You are so way out of line. I'm very happy for you that your small children survived being in a malarial area. I would not have taken my children into a high risk area that young, I would not have...
  10. Re: Travelling in Botswana while being 3 month pregnant

Another consideration is that research from The Gambia suggests that malaria-carrying mosquitoes are twice as attracted to pregnant women as non-pregnant women. The full Lancet article is here.

  11. Re: Travelling in Botswana while being 3 month pregnant

Are you medically trained? If not, please don't give malaria advice of a specialist nature.
  12. Re: Travelling in Botswana while being 3 month pregnant

Malaria is endemic in northern Botswana all year round so you need to check with a travel health specialist which prophylaxis is safe for your wife to take - I'm not a doctor, so can't make a...

    Re: High Lift Jack

We get our grains etc from Yellow Submarine in Ottery, Cape Town https://yellowsubmarinefoods.co.za/
Not sure if they ship to your neck of the woods, it's a fairly small family-run enterprise.

    Re: Camping skillet

Outdoor Warehouse stock the LK cast iron skillets, I think 25cm or thereabouts is the size. Only drawback for me is that it's all one piece, so the handle is part of the pan so it gets almost as hot...

    Re: Lusaka to Mfuwe

If the road is fixed after the rains, and you have time, the back route is much more rewarding, but you will probably have to bush camp one night along the way so make allowance for that.

  24. Re: Fuel consumption calculation for overlanding (planning stages)

There's an insert on Carte Blanche tonight on the fire (full disclosure: my wife is the producer of the insert). Volunteers are up at UCT today helping salvage what they can from the library.

Re: Huge fire on Table Mountain

Hi Peter, no they don't. Some of the material had been digitised, but much of it hadn't. It's a massive process, especially as many of the donated collections are in the process of being catalogued.
