Re: Poor repairs after an accident.

The "jig" is probably that straightener I was talking about. It's a good sign.

Unfortunately you can assume that the structural area of the impact has lost a bit rigidity to a certain degree. It...
  2. Re: My FJ 60 (2F) - Servicing, Mods, Tuning, and Repairs

    Ok, let me try:

at higher altitude, the air density (mass per volume) is less than at sea level. The engine always sucks in a certain volume of air per revolution or intake cycle. Hence, at high...

Re: Poor repairs after an accident.

Isn't there a proper body shop, not just a panel beater, you can take your car to? Point is with accidents like that the entire vehicle has most probably been affected.
In order to repair that sort...
  4. Re: My FJ 60 (2F) - Servicing, Mods, Tuning, and Repairs

Judging from my own 2F, the engine is a bit sensitive to sudden throttle openings. I always have to adjust my driving style after I have driven fuel injected engines for a while.

    Re: Np300 4x4

Again, back then none of the competitors was any better.
Without being judgemental about the product, it is what it is: 20+ year old design sold new. However, other products have evolved during...

    Re: Np300 4x4

Back then it was the norm. Now it's a relic of the past, where most other DC bakkies offer more rear leg room.
  7. Re: 4x4 self drive hire - insurance does not seem to cover write-off

I said I would take reviews with a pinch of salt, I'm sure you are familiar with that expression?

I have been in tourism for over 10 years and have worked together with some smaller car hire...

    Re: BF Goodrich Advantage SUV

I remember having read plenty of dreadful reviews on that tyre. Maybe google it?
But apparently they don't stand up in any way to the BFG A/T or M/T.

    Re: Prado here?

Try to find a 2nd hand dealer who is willing to give you a Prado for the day.

    Since Francois mentioned the FJ:
I got an FJ Cruiser, which shares the axles and suspension with the Prado 120. I put...

    Re: 265/70/17 A/T Tyre advice

Those tryes have got 2 ply sidewalls and according to the information on the tyre itself, neither of those 2 plies is Kevlar. Apart from that, the GY Wrangler is a rather tame A/T tyre and I don't...
  11. Re: 4x4 self drive hire - insurance does not seem to cover write-off

Maybe. But I know to take such "reviews" with a large pinch of salt. After all you only hear one side of the story, if you tend to believe those who scream the loudest, then Asco is probably awful....

    Re: How damaging is corrugation?

It all depends on your tyre's sidewall height and vehicle weight. But in general, if 2.2 bar is your normal tyre pressure, 1.7 - 1.5 should be ok. The main thing is temperature: deflate the tyres,...

Re: R350 000.00 What would you buy?

Sounds like an FJ Cruiser would be perfect for you. The very steep windscreen and small windows around keep the temperature in the cabin down like now other. It is the coolest vehicle temperature...

Re: Advice with first Land Cruiser

Both would have roughly the same fuel consumption, the EFI would give you more power though.
Seeing how difficult it is these days to find someone able to work on carburetors, I would go for EFI...

Re: R350 000.00 What would you buy?

Put a snorkel and decent bumper on any of the new bakkies and they look the part. Stock standard the NP300 isn't going to win a beauty contest either.

At least in a modern bakkie there is a better...

    Re: Slaghuis Swakopmund / Henties

Don't know about Henties, but for Swakopmund I can say this:
Namakwa butchery usually got good quality meat. You get lots of frozen meat as well. Prices are decent. They got nice biltong,...

Re: R350 000.00 What would you buy?

Was going to say that, but seeing that he's got a baby and plans on keeping the vehicle for long, the Prado might be the better choice. FJs aren't really that family friendly.

  21. Re: My FJ 60 (2F) - Servicing, Mods, Tuning, and Repairs

    Re: Need some advice

  24. Re: My FJ 60 (2F) - Servicing, Mods, Tuning, and Repairs

Maybe lean it out a tiny bit again and see how it runs. Thing about these old engines is, they take forever to warm up properly compared to modern...

    Re: Diesel particle filter

Those VW DPFs have got that burn free cycle. The ECU measures the pressure differential over the DPF and determines when a burn free cycle becomes necessary.
That is how the system looks after...

Isn't there a metal plate with the timing specs riveted into the engine compartment?

    Re: X140 customizing.......

    FJ60 flex

The other day I found a nice washed out ditch in the road along the water pipeline north of Swakopmund and let the old Cruiser flex a bit. 1983 FJ60 with OME suspension.

    Re: Lightweight drawer system

You could use 4 tie down points, like these:
    540185

    Or cargo tracks https://4x4direct.co.za/603-cargo-tracks-and-fittings

You can then secure the drawer system with 2 ratchet straps.

Petri, I just want to make sure you pull the choke on the left of the steering wheel and not the hand throttle on the right?
