    Re: What are you smoking?

We have a smoker, similar to the one on the left. During the lockdown we used rooibos tea to smoke a fresh snoek, it turned out very nice. You could definitely taste the rooibos, but by the next day...

Re: There are LIONS in our camp

This newspaper report raises two questions:

    1. On the original image in this thread, the image was copyrighted to Peet Pelser.
    2. The so called original image in the newspaper, had been doctored,...

Re: Trip Report — Strange days, empty land.

Hi Dave, I trust you are well.

We had a booking for Koiimasis for tonight and tomorrow night, but here we are, locked up in Cape Town

    Re: R364 Clanwilliam to Calvinia

The road surface was fine, the Botterkloof Pass was newly graded (is that the correct term? die stootskraper was daar )

No road blocks, I in fact made two legal trips, the first one was to...

    Re: R364 Clanwilliam to Calvinia

Jip I'm now also a fan of this road, did it about 2 weeks ago north to south (don't worry it was all legal and above board, permits and all), having previously done it south to north on route to...

    Re: West Coast/Cedar Berg Camping

Algeria, Jamaka and Sanddrif can be very busy during school holidays and long weekends, maybe you can time your visit there to avoid the crowds. A quiet Sanddrif is a good base to explore the area....

As I understand it, that is the idea, to draw the salt from the salt slab.

    Re: Rim Value?

Last year I bought a new basic (and very ugly) steel rim for just less than R 1000 from Caryota.

Re: How old is your mobile fridge?

40 litre Engel, bought new in 2006, still working as good as ever, replaced the thermometer batteries for the second time last month.

    Re: Camping in the Tankwa

I was planning a Southern Namibia trip in early June, with the first 2 nights in the Richtersveld. When I heard rumours of border closures, I realised that our cross border movements might be...

    Re: Camping in the Tankwa

    And a few more.

On my way back I had lunch at the Tankwa Padstal and about 3 km south of the Padstal I came across a family of 5 in a sedan with a venter trailer. Four canoes on the trailer and...

    Camping in the Tankwa

The weekend before the lockdown we went camping at Skaapwagterspos in the Tankwa National Park, it was bush camping as the only amenity is a single tree. My friends had to work the Monday, but I...
  17. Re: Trip Report: Tankwa, Cederberg, West Coast & Northern Cape

Thank you Frans, you visited 3 of my favourite regions in SA : Tankwa, Cederberg and the northern section of the West Coast.
  18. Re: How much would you pay to camp on a farm in Namibia

That is extremely cheap. If one takes the cost of erecting facilities, maintaining it, paying wages, never mind factoring in the cost of the land, the owner is certainly not going to make money from...

Re: So who is going camping this weekend?

For the first time in a long while, I can post here: We are planning a bush camp at Skaapwagterspos in the Tankwa this coming weekend, it is bush camping as there are zero facilities apart from a...
  20. Re: Would you help someone in distress? My story….

Just incredible, usually one has one story about a trip that you can dine out on, but in your case it was a story x 100. Well done for helping and continuing to help despite all the challenges you...

Re: Do I need to book?

I will suggest booking at Sesriem if you want to stay in the NWR camp. There are other options in the vicinity. Kasane during SA school holidays might also post a challenge.
  23. Re: Would you help someone in distress? My story….

You can use the second battery to jump start, just last week I have used mine to jump start our forklift at the factory.
  24. Re: Driving along the outer edge around South Africa (along the coast and border)

Justin Fox of Getaway Magazine fame did a similar trip and then wrote a book about his experience: The Marginal Safari.
  25. Re: Would you help someone in distress? My story….

But seriously, if you read the last few paragraphs: he walked out, an hour until he...

Hi Anton, very impressive! Good to see that you are doing well.

En die overlander is seker nie so vinnig soos die Datsun waarmee jy in die 1980's op Stellenbosch mee rondgery het nie:)

Can you be more specific about the chalets at Oudebaskraal. The closest accommodation to the dam is the Hunters house, the Jagtershut, but that is not open to the public.
