    Have you thought about renting an "offroad" caravan. Camping trailers by their nature are a lot more work to setup and break down, especially for 4 people to sleep.

    Uri, check with the tour group guides what they consider to be the minimum equipment required by individuals in the group. They should have a lot of equipment as tour guides and you can go from there.

    personally, I would do the Belfast route and then down the R33 to Carolina
    The R38 is a truck nightmare with the resultant damage to surfaces.
